MOMMA KNOWS… winter beauty trends 2015 (lips and nails)

IMG_5281

IMG_5283 Metallics and shades of grey are huge for winter nails – these Essie colors in chinchilly and good as gold are 2 of my favorite go-to’s!

I’ve already shared some of the hot winter eye makeup trends but as far as lips and nails, these are all the winter beauty trends 2015 has to offer.  Nails and lips are often a great place to experiment with color and this season is no different, while polishes can get wilder than lipsticks there are still plenty of options to be experimenting with.  Winter beauty trends 2015 are all about a touch of sparkle, a lot of shine and a splash of vibrance.  Whether you want to make a statement (without saying a word) or prefer to go with more safe and subtle lips and nails I have lots of options for you!  Check out some of my favorite winter beauty trends 2015 that will transform your look for the New Year!

RED LIPS:

Red lips at the Anna Sui f/w ’14 show (photo by: Marcus Tondo for style.com)

Everything from ruby red to deep oxblood, this winter is all about statement lips.  Of course, the super rich blood red may not appropriate for daytime, whether at the office or lunch with friends (reserve this trend for an evening out on the town) but Taylor Swift has proven a gorgeous pop of red lip and more neutral eye can be captivating at any time.  This crimson lip is bold, sexy and every celebrity is rocking it on the red carpet just as so many models were seen sporting it on the fall/winter runway.  It might just be time for you to start experimenting with these deeper hues….

So, yes, deep red lips are hot for evening, but for daytime nothing beats the safe yet pretty peachy pout.  A step up from your natural lip tone it gives a supple yet feminine touch to your makeup.  And while it’s perfect for day it still transitions beautifully into the evening.  A great peach perfect lip might be just what your makeup kit needs.

We saw plenty of metallics for eyes, but they were also supremely popular for the lips.  Add a touch of sparkle to your makeup with a soft, pretty, glittery lip.  The glittery lip is quite a bold makeup choice so best to keep everything else quite neutral (unless of course you are walking down a runway or Lady Gaga).  It’s one part feminine and one part rock and roll – so you choose how to wear it!

Perhaps a backlash against all the crazy colors and designs, the Fall/Winter runway showed and array of barely there polish.  Whether sandy hues or a classic clear or ballet slipper tint – there was a back to basics approach to nails…  Still shiny looking and healthy but in that perfect flesh toned kind of way.

Well, with crimson lips comes the gorgeous red talons.  Talk about glam – there were plenty of beautiful red nails to gawk at during the fall/winter collections.  Again, it feels a bit back to brass tacks – this isn’t the wild crazy manicures we were used to seeing – but perfectly polished red nails scream old hollywood glam like no other color.

MOMMA WANTS… new fall eye makeup

IMG_4107

Hmmm…. will this color suit my baby face???

IMG_4108

Yes, and it’s perfect for fall!

Every season we get inundated with the latest beauty trends so today I wanted to focus on the latest and greatest fall eye makeup to update your look. From shadows to liners and lashes – everything you need to know that made an impact on the runway and is hitting cosmetic counters and drugstore shelves right now.  Remember, the key is not to supercharge your look – it’s not about going nuts with editorial false lashes and dramatic theater worthy makeup – it’s about a fresh new hue swept across your lids, perhaps a new placement of eyeliner.  New fall eye makeup trends are all about enhancing your natural beauty with some new more modern techniques and shades…  Consider subtle tweaks to your beauty regime – a new pencil or shadow can instantly revive your look and prepare you for the new season.  Check out some of my favorite fall eye makeup and get ready for the holidays with a fresh face!

It may sound nuts – but a daytime smoky eye is more about neutral tones like brown and amber that give you that look and feel but in a far more subtle, wearable way.  Even that slightly slept in yet subtle smokey eye can work and add drama to your every day look.  This smokey eye can be created using some of the metallic hues from above and the great eyeliners you’ll see below.

Strong brows – not big masculine furry eyebrows, but just a slightly bolder brow – think the likes of Cara Delevingne or Brooke Shields’ classic look.  Still well manicured, just don’t be afraid of them being a bit fuller.  As a part greek girl with plenty of brows to spare, this trend brings me great happiness.

Super lashes are in, so time to invest in some new mascara and more is more these days.  It’s all about long spidery lashes – certainly on of my favorite looks.  You can do upper and lower lashes or just upper but don’t forget about using your eye lash curler and comb because you ant to focus plenty of attention on those luxuries lashes.

MOMMA KNOWS… the beauty secrets you need now

IMG_8188

My secret to healthy hair is less is more! The less you wash it – the shinier, stronger and longer it grows! This is a flash back of Max and I – another great beauty secret – you always look more beautiful when you smile!

I think by now we know the universal beauty secrets like drink more water and bronzer is cheaper than botox (spf people – all day every day) but its the tips I’ve learned from some of the top hair stylists and makeup artists I want to share with you today…  Every time I’m on set with some of the beauty industry’s finest I learn something new and here’s the shocker – sometimes these tricks don’t come with the hefty price tag.  Some of my favorite beauty secrets involve items that you have already – you just didn’t realize what else they can do!  Other times I have learnt that in fact – less is more.  We are so inundated with new products on the market to achieve the latest look when in actual fact, sometimes the greatest beauty secret is that we need a break from it all…  So keep drinking water wearing sunblock and check out some of my favorite beauty secrets for a younger more refreshed looking you!

TIPS FOR MAKE UP APPLICATION:

Beware of using powder.  A light dusting o the t-zone area for really oily skin is okay but it’s better to use oil blotting papers in order to avoid a caked on look.  Also, powder can settle into those fine lines around our eyes and mouth which will make us look older (no thank you!).  Also, using a tinted moisturizer is always best for giving us the moisture our skin craves without looking thick.

Contouring!  This is the true beauty secret of the makeup artists to the stars – it’s all about using highlights and contours to give your bone structure a bit of a helping hand.  Bronzer should be used under your cheek line (basically sweeping along under the apples of your cheeks) it can also be used along your jawline, along your temples and down the sides of your neck.  ALWAYS remember to blend – the key is to make the shadows look natural.  Blush should be applied above your cheekbone to the apples of your cheeks – you can find those apples by smiling apply lightly and blend! Then apply your highlighter to those areas that naturally catch light – under the brows and alone the top of your cheek bones sweeping upwards toward your temple.  Of course there  are may other ways to use contouring but beware to use in moderation and keep the look natural – bringing out your natural beauty rather than caking it on.

White eye liner!  I’ve said it before, but it’s one of my favorite beauty tricks – applying white eye liner to the waterline (inside lash line) makes your eyes look bigger, whiter and brighter!  For an extra pop of bright eyes you can also apply the eyeliner to the inside corner of your eye (closest to your nose) to give a wider eyed fresh faced look.  Another great use for your white eyeliner is as a primer for your eye shadow (you can also just use your foundation over the entire eye lid to the brow) but using the white will make the color of your shadow more intense and keep it in place longer!

Make Up Forever kohl pencil in matte white 2K $17

I have been a long time fan of Benefit’s eye bright…  Apply it in the inner corner where your eye hits your nose, under your brow line and at the outer corners of your eyes, blend and it creates a highlight that refracts light and makes it look as though you’ve had a proper night sleep (which, if you’re like me is a distant memory!)

Benefit eye bright

Benefit eye bright $20

A great eye lash curler!  I SWEAR by my Shu Uemura eye lash curler…  Curling your eye lashes makes them appear ten times longer!  Additional tip – heat your curler!  Just blast it with a hair dryer (I’ve even just held it up to my lamp) for about 5 seconds and it just makes gives your lashes that extra boost!  Heat also helps make eyeliner glide on smoother.  I just scribble on the back of my hand with it for a bit – the friction heats the liner just enough to make application that much easier.

Make lashes look thicker by applying some baby powder (with a cue tip) to your lashes before applying mascara.  The baby powder will stick to your lashes giving them a fuller more luscious look!

Johnson's baby powder - beauty secrets

Johnson’s baby powder $3.44

The secret to great looking lips – exfoliate, define, color and keep lipstick in place! First, exfoliating is simple, apply a lip balm and use a tooth brush to lightly scrub them in a circular motion then wipe away the execs flakes.   Next, define lips with a neutral lip liner – if you want a fuller look you can extend your lip line (very slightly – you don’t want to look clowny) with the lip liner and fill in.  Finally, apply the lip color of your choice and then place a tissue over your pout dust on top of the tissue with translucent powder – this makes your lipstick last longer!  Oh, and of course, the old trick of sticking one finger in your mouth and pulling it out – all the lipstick that ends up on your finger would have ended up on your teeth… your welcome.

Becca nude liner plump and define lip pencil

Becca nude liner plump and define lip pencil $23

Make your makeup go further!!  One trick is to have your lipstick double as a cream blush – but you can also get 2 in ones such as the bars multiple stick or Benefit’s benetint which work for both lips and cheeks!

Nars matte multiple

Nars matte multiple $39 (for lips and cheeks)

Benefit benetint

Benefit benetint $30

Maybelline colorsensational vivids lipstick

Maybelline colorsensational vivids lipstick $7.49 (one of these great lipstick colors could double as a cream blush)

BEAUTY SECRETS FOR HEALTHY LOOKING HAIR:

When it comes to hair care – this is when I believe less is more…  Less washing, less product, less heat = healthier, stronger, better looking hair.  My hair is long.  Like SUPER long… It’s my thing, my trademark and even when I contemplate cutting it my husband and hair stylist talk me out of it… The question I get most is how does your hair look so strong and healthy with barely any split ends?  The answer, I only wash it every 3 to 4 days…  It started out as convenience (washing my hair is like washing a car – and blow drying… yikes!) and then out of necessity – having a child I simply didn’t have the time or energy.  And you know what?  My hair got used to it.  Less washing means less products stripping your hair of it’s natural moisture, color and condition – it also means less heat from the hot shower, hair dryer and flat irons (although I rarely rarely use a flat iron).  All of this less means more healthy looking hair!  I also only shampoo the roots of my hair and then let the water carry it through and I only condition the ends of my hair to prevent the top of my head from getting too greasy…  And for those of you terrified of abandoning their daily or even every other daily hair washes – there is no need to fret because dry shampoo is your hair’s new hero.  Dry shampoo not only cuts the oil it also gives lift and volume to your hair revitalizing it and allowing you to go longer and longer between washes!

Toothpaste.  A white(none of that red and blue) toothpaste (not gel) that has ingredients like baking soda and peroxide (but not bleach) not only helps clean and brighten teeth but can also help with break outs.  Organic or natural toothpastes work best and have little to no fluoride which could potentially cause an allergic reaction.  Simply dab some toothpaste on pimples before bed and wash off in the morning and they help to dry out those bothersome spots.

Vaseline.  Good ‘ol petroleum jelly is in every medicine cabinet and its not only a great skin protectant but its great on dry chapped skin.  From cuticles to elbows to those dry cracked feet.  During the summer time when I’m walking barefoot and wearing sandals all the time the heels of my feet get a lot of ware and tear – I love to slather my feet in vaseline and slip into my socks for instant softness.

Under eye circle remedies.  It’s no myth that hemorrhoid cream such as Preparation H can actually help reduce under eye circles and puffiness. This has been the beauty secret for beauty queens, models and actors for ages – just be careful not to get any in your eyes!!  There are, however, many more natural remedies that are also effective.  Everything from used teabags (that have cooled), cucumbers, raw potatoes and even spoons that have been in the fridge can be used to help tackle your bothersome under eye baggage!

Preparation H cream

Coconut oil.  There is no question that coconut oil is a wonder product.  Yes, it the best oil to cook with due to it’s high smoke point and a great substitute for butter but there’s many other beautiful uses for it…   It can be used on hair as an ultimate conditioning mask (also great for infant cradle cap), it can be used as a natural anti itch for everything from bug bites to chicken pox and as a moisturizer for your face, cracked elbows and even your baby’s delicate skin…  But there is another use for it that I find fascinating…  Its called oil pulling – people are raving about this process  which is swishing coconut oil in your mouth in the morning for 20 minutes for whiter teeth and greater cavity protection!  And there is nothing more beautiful that a great smile, right?

MOMMA KNOWS… its time for summer skin and hair care!

photo

Applying sunblock may not be the most fun – but it IS extremely important – yes it will prevent wrinkles but it will also prevent cancer! Its time to review some summer beauty tips to see you through the season.

The sun is out and hotter than ever, so it’s time to start thinking about summer skin and hair care.  Summer time means more time outside at the beach, by the pool or just out and about – but the heat and sun can take its toll on our appearance.  Summer skin and hair care is all about protection, maintenance and a certain amount of giving into the elements and enjoying it.  Getting a little color (as safely and slowly as possible) gives a healthy glow, embracing your slight wavy or incredible curls can be gorgeous and caring for our largest organ (our skin) is not just an aesthetic concern, it is ultimately best for our overall health and well being.  Yes, summer mean spending lots more time outside.  It means vacations, the beach and generally enjoying the great outdoors – so check out some of my top tips and products for summer skin and hair care to get the most out of the season looking and feeling great!

First and foremost – sunblock is not just a suggestion – it is a MUST for everyone in your family (including you)!  Yes, it keeps wrinkles and other signs of aging (like dark spots) at bay but most importantly it protects us from harmful UV rays which can ultimately cause skin cancer.  Always wear minimum of spf 15 (preferably higher) even if you’re just in your car, remember to reapply and for your little ones be extra vigilant for that precious delicate skin – I use SPF 50 on Max – he hates it – but it’s not up for negotiation.

One of the biggest summer skin issues are break outs.  Being outside in the heat means we sweat and our pores can get clogged leading to unsightly acne.  I always use a different sunblock for my face which is oil free to help ensure that dirt and oil don’t get trapped.  I also always use a higher spf on my face – I would rather have a pale face that I can add some bronzer too for that summer glow than have the wrinkles and brown spots that come with any kind of tan…  Then I opt for a skin care regime that is geared towards fighting break outs while still keeping my skin moist (in order to fight the aging process) – remember, a lot of acne treatments are drying so make sure to compensate with an appropriate moisturizer.

PS – extra tips – Max was born in June and it was hot hot hot and I found he was prone to heat rashes – a luke warm bath with baking soda is a miracle at treating heat rash (as well as bad diaper rash or most skin ailments).  Also, if you of happen to burn (we’ve all missed a spot when applying sunblock or neglected to reapply after being in the water) I have found dairy products are great for soothing red skin – a cloth dipped in milk or even just applying some yogurt to those hot spots can help provide relief.  But please be vigilant with the sunblock!!!

Arm & Hammer baking soda

Arm & Hammer baking soda $6.60

We do tend to be more conscious now a days of protecting our skin but we mustn’t forget out hair!  The sun and heat depletes moisture, lightens it and can ultimately lead to dry unruly hair…  If you can, opt to accessories with hats or scarves to protect your follicles, but also give your hair some extra moisture treatments.

Salt water and pool chemicals are also not great friends to your lucious locks.  I like to try to keep my hair out of chlorinated pools and take a nod from the surfers and go with the flow allowing salt water to add texture to my hair.  Giving into your hairs natural curl can be fun and easier than trying to fight it.  Your hair will get enough heat damage from being outside so try to lay of styling tools like hair dryers and straightening irons.  Use products that enhance your natural texture and work with it.  I call it my vacation hair (because I always leave those styling tools at home when I travel) – I apply curling balms, scrunch my hair an even put it in little buns around my head to give it extra curl (my hair is naturally straight with a slight wave that actually became kinkier post baby) so I have to work a bit harder to emphasize the curl and get those fabulous tousled waves.  You can still control the frizz but enjoy a new summer look by embracing your curls!

MOMMA NEEDS… beauty shortcuts for the time (& sleep) deprived

BIML2369

Time is of the essence – so don’t be afraid to multi-task! Beauty shortcuts keep us looking our best even when time is in short supply.

One thing is for certain – there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day and the fall off can often be our personal upkeep – so beauty shortcuts are in high demand.  What once was luxurious ‘me’ time is now few and far between… Mani/pedi’s, facials, haircut and color – heck even washing my hair every other day seem far too stressful to fit into my incredibly busy schedule.  At the same time, I can’t stand to see those pesky gray hairs coming through and chipped or just un-manicured nails… Beauty shortcuts are just what this momma needs to take some pride in her appearance and get back as much of the time that is in such short supply.  Our lives are blessed and full – some with incredible careers, children, husbands, friends, maybe even a hobby – there is a myth that women can have it ALL but the truth is, something has to give…  For me, its certainly trips to the salon, so these beauty shortcuts are essential for allowing me to look my best in the quickest and easiest way possible.  Check out some of my beauty shortcuts for all of us time (and sleep) deprived ladies.

HAIR:  My poor hair.  It grows like a weed so the grays come fast and I don’t get to see my stylist more than 2 times a year…  I also only get to wash it every 3 to 4 days because I just don’t have time to blow dry it…  In actuality, the fact that I only wash and blow dry my hair once a week is a blessing because it keeps my hair healthy and in better condition.  The less heat your hair is exposed to, the less dryness and split ends…  So, a great way to maintain the condition of your hair is to actually spend less time on it.. However, it also helps to use a leave in condition and it definitely means using a dry shampoo to absorb the oil (when the hair starts looking greasy) and wearing your hair up more (the less you touch it the less oil transfer too).  PS – extra tip – if you don’t have any dry shampoo you should really get it but in a pinch you could sprinkle baby powder on your roots which is also effective (especially for blondes)

Living Proof no frizz leave in conditioner

Living Proof no frizz leave in conditioner $24

SKIN:  Our skin is our largest organ and it’s the first thing people notice…  Its how people can tell if you’re healthy, if you’ve slept, if you’ve been on vacation.  Its also the outermost way we age so it should be of the utmost importance that we take care of it…  After all, prevention is better than cure.  Yet, how often do we get to the dermatologist or the facialist?  How often do we get the time to make ourselves up?  And when was the last time we went to the beach (with plenty of spf) or got a spray tan so that we could get that healthy glow?  I can tell you I can’t remember the last time…  And so anything that helps me get healthy, clean, glowing, younger looking skin is welcome…

First of all, remember to get your 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water a day.  Swap your second cup of coffee for water and keep going all day.  Then try to find ways to take care of your skin by multi tasking – put on a face mask to help exfoliate, rejuvenate or fix any problem areas of your skin while you fix breakfast in the morning and for break outs and wrinkle – invest in some great products that you can apply before bed that do the work while you sleep…

NAILS:  I have to say, one of the things I miss most from my former child-free life is the bi-monthly mani/pedis… A luxury, I know, but it was always a great bit of me time or activity to do with a girlfriend…  That said, they have definitely become far far less frequent now… But I DO try to fit in a pedicure every 4 to 5 weeks if possible.  We need a bit of self indulgence…  I fit it in when I’m running errands and I only get a pedicure so that I can use my hands to catch up on emails so that I don’t feel entirely self indulgent…  I don’t know why we are made to feel guilty for taking some personal time but for me, if I can accomplish something while enjoying some pampering I will be that much more likely to take the time to do it.  That said, my poor fingernails take a beating…  Between washing bottles (more like zippy cups) constantly, constant hand washing and being a stylist (as a stylist we are using our hands constantly) manicures don’t last long anyway…  That said, I think keeping nails short, clean and even just applying a clear polish that double as a bottom and top coat can give it that shine without too much drying time (also there usually nail strengtheners) and you also avoid the horrible chipped nail effect from colored tips…

Deborah Lippmann hydrating hardener (top and bottom polish)

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen playing with my makeup… time to get some replacement makeup in time for spring 2014!

As the fall collections for 2014 are in full swing I’m looking back at what happened in the spring collections that we need to start thinking about now.  I’m talking about the hot new spring makeup trends we can look forward to and start thinking about.  The major happenings for beauty that we can look forward to is clean, barely there makeup for the skin with pops of color on the lips and eyes (not at the same time).  The idea for spring makeup trends is fresh faced with pops of bright to move past the vicious winter.  For those who are a bit more weary of color, shades of shimmery gold stunned on the catwalk and can give you and overall ethereal, fresh faced look with a bit of sparkle…  Of course, nails are still fun and fearless, albeit it slightly more subdued than they have been.   Beauty (makeup) is always the fastest, easiest and least expensive way to look amazing while keeping up with the latest style.  Obviously, we can’t take everything that comes down the runway seriously (or else we might end up looking like we’re early for halloween) but there are plenty of beautiful looks that are sure to be capturing our attention at every beauty counter or drugstore makeup aisle right now.  Check out some of my favorite new spring makeup trends that I’m ready to try now!

SKIN: Skin was all about keeping it au natural.  Clean, beautiful, healthy looking skin where moisturizer was more apparent than foundation.  For those of us who feel we need a bit more coverage go for a tinted moisturizer and invest in a great concealer…  Also, go for more neutral tones of blush which can give you a bit of contour without adding too much color.  Let your natural beauty shine through and get the best out of your skin for spring!

LIPS: The hot new colors for lips this spring include shades of orange and shades of purple.  This may sound a bit wild but its actually so beautiful and poppy – think fun and feminine!  Of course, on the runway anything goes and sometimes the pigment may be richer than what we wear in our daily lives but consider these more lavender and tangerine tones for day (perhaps in a gloss) and then go for something bold and vibrant for a night out.  Personally, I never like a lip and eye to both be bold at the same time so, when going for a pop of color on the lip stick with neutral tones on the eye lids and mascara (according to taste – I love lashes).  The look will be fresh, vibrant but not overdone.

EYES:  A huge spring makeup trend was a wash of color on the eyes.  There was plenty of blue but also various shades of pastel from greens to pinks and lavender.  Don’t be afraid – people get so wrapped up in the fear that blue eye shade = 80′s tragedy – this is not the case – its modern, fresh, lightweight and beautiful.  You can do any shade that you gravitate towards but traditionally shades of blue and green looks great on those eye colors and shades of purple and lavender look stunning with brown eyes – but don’t be afraid to experiment – one great way to do this is to buy a color palette with various colors and try them!  The color wash means a full sweep across the lid, even accented a bit under the lash line….  And for those who aren’t ready to make the plunge – there were also great colorful looks with a simple eyeliner…

NAILS:  Manicures have been getting crazier and more fabulous every season with celeb manicurists having to one up themselves constantly for the mani-cam.  Fun nail colors can be the easiest and longest lasting way to look stylish!  Colors for spring are various pastel shades from sea greens to apricots to periwinkle and various fun shades of navy, purple and chocolate. You can keep it simple with just a fun pop of color or get a bit crazy with a minimalist accent (a bow on your cuticle, an ironic french manicure, an upside down french manicure or perhaps even a monogram…).  There are plenty of great options for the nail enthusiasts who want to make a subtle statement or get a bit more wild.

ALL OVER BEAUTY:   The gold rush – its all about shimmer and shine and shades of gold.  It gives a freshness and polish to any look – it feels safer than color but gives you a very modern glow.  I personally love a touch of golden shimmer on the inside corners of the eyes as well as some shine from a highlighter on the brown bone and cheek bone…    But, you can use the gold shimmer on eyes, cheeks, lips and even nails – check out some great options to give you that extra sparkle!

MOMMA LOVES… Orange crush – great orange options for us and them

As you may have noticed, I like orange.  I always like a pop of color – but orange is so special because its a statement but it doesn’t have the girly-ness of pink or the look at me of red – its a unisex color with a bit of an edge.  Its vibrant and modern and it just makes me smile.  Its just  great contrasting color to pair with shades of white, denim, or even color blocked with colors like pink and purple.  I’m not talking about an orange overhaul – it might be a pop of orange print, and orange bag or just an orange lipstick…  It brings light to the face because it has such warm undertones and I absolutely love dressing Max in orange.  The beauty of orange is its also unisex – so when we were decorating his nursery and even when I’m shopping for his clothes I know orange will go a lot further (if we happened to ever have a girl).  I also like it because its easy to keep an eye on Max when he’s wearing a bright pop of color.  So, here it is – some of my favorite orange options for women and children!

MOMMA TIPS… beauty fixes

As a mom the first thing that went out of the window was the intense concentration I used to spend on my physical appearance.  Pedicures now happen half as often (manicures never anymore), hair cut and color maybe 2 or 3 times a year (heck I’m lucky if I get to wash my hair twice a week!) and facials are a thing of the past…  Sometimes I look in the mirror and cringe at my lack of upkeep and I know I need to carve out the time to focus more energy on myself.  I know I’m not alone in this and that we, as mothers, spend so much time caring for everyone else we forget about taking care of ourselves…  So, I wanted to do a post on beauty fixes – the various products and practices that will help cure our raggedy look.  I’ve focused on anti-aging remedies previously, but I wanted to shift focus from the wrinkles and dark circles and turn my attention to all the other beauty fixes we mommas need.  I’m talking about the grey hairs that are coming fast and furious, the hyper pigmentations (brown spots) that resulted from pregnancy, even a much needed teeth whitening…  We all have our insecurities – so here are some great beauty fixes to get the year started on a more beautiful (perhaps even pedicured) foot!

FACE:

One of the worst things about pregnancy was the hyperpigmentation that erupted all over my face.  Hyperpigmentation are the dark spots and uneven skin tone that happens to many women during pregnancy but it can also be caused by sun exposure and acne scars…  Its faded somewhat over time and I can cover them with makeup but I would be lying if I said they don’t bother me…  I talked to a dermatologist about it and he said that some creams do help but you have to use it consistently every day and it does take time.  The most effective method of eliminating them is a combination of creams and laser treatment by a dermatologist.  I know that there is still the possibility of having another baby sometime in the future so I’ll wait to try the lasers until then, but in the meantime I will be investing in this SkinCeuticals cream which my research and Allure magazine claims to be the best.

clinique even better dark spot corrector

Clinique even better dark spot corrector $49.50 – $76

And while you’re waiting for spots to fade – a great full coverage concealer is great for masking your pregnancy mask…

makeup forever full coverage concealer

Makeup Forever full coverage concealer $32

Ugh, nothing is worse than getting those pesky pimples…  For me I get those deep set ones that hurt like crazy and stick around forever (or until I can get to the dermatologist).  The hormonal upheaval that results from having a baby can seriously throw skin out of wack and there are times I feel like a spotty teenager again…  I have found the Clarisonic system absolutely incredible at helping to deep clean my face which prevents them from happening in the first place!  Furthermore, having a regular routine to target skin issues such as the Neutrogena acne therapy system will help your skin looking its best.  For those breakouts that do occur the best product on the market is the Kate Sommerville Eradikate – put it on at night and by morning you’ll find spots significantly reduced!

Clarisonic system

Clarisonic system $169

neutrogena acne therapy system

Neutrogena acne therapy system $19.99

TEETH:

I live in LA – the land of pearly whites but mine are more of a pearly off-white…  I want to feel confident with my smile because I love to smile… So I think its time for some teeth whitening and there are so many great options that we can do right at home!

Glo Brilliant teeth whitening

GLO brilliant whitening gels

GLO Brilliant whitening gels $45

For a less expensive solution – good old fashion crest white strips are also great!

Crest 3D white strips

Crest 3D white strips $37.99

HAIR:

Yes, I’m going gray.  I suppose it comes with the whole getting older territory but those little white hairs make me nuts!  I also don’t like using harsh chemicals on my hair…  L’Oreal has a line of permanent hair color called Inoa which not only delivers great color, but is free of harsh chemicals and inexpensive!

L'oreal inoa hair color

L’Oreal Inoa permanent hair color $16.30

My hair grows very quickly so when I just want a quick root touch up I use this Clairol product which is quick and easy to apply (but only lasts a few weeks):

clairol root touch up

Clairol root touch up $5.50

For an even more temporary fix – this spray on gray hair concealer works magic!

rita hazan root coverage

Rita Hazan grey hair root concealer $25

My insanely long hair gets very little attention and sits up in a pony tail or bun most of the time so that it doesn’t get in the way…  As a result I often get intense tangles – dreadlocks tangle which are virtually impossible to get out without my handy Tangle Teezer.  I have posted about this amazing brush several times – but I am seriously obsessed with it.  I tell every hairdresser and mom to kids with long hair I meet about it because it quickly and painlessly gets out even the craziest tangles.  It is my absolute must have!

image1xl-1

Tangle Teezer $18.51

During pregnancy strange things happen to you – one of the craziest things is what happens to your hair!  Its thick and lustrous and you actually don’t shed it (as we all know we usually do).  Then, about 3 months post delivery it happens – all the hair you didn’t lose during those 9 months starts to come out like crazy!  I have a LOT of hair so you wouldn’t really notice (unless you shared a bathroom with me – sorry honey) but for a lot of women this hair loss can be incredibly traumatic and more noticeable – a great vitamin that’s specifically for hair and nails can be a great solution.  I will note, that I actually lost a clump of hair – all at once – about half the diameter of a dime – my hair stylist told me about (it was at the back of my head) and told me to consult with a doctor – and sure enough losing a clump of hair like that can be the sign of a thyroid issue which can be common post partum (which I indeed had).  So, keep an eye out for this sort of hair loss and talk to your doctor about getting that thyroid checked!

phyto hair and nail supplement

Phyto hair and nail supplement $59

HAIR REMOVAL:

A lot of women complain about shaving – and often this goes neglected…  I have to shave every day and I have to say, my shower time is often the only alone time I get and the time I come up with some of my best ideas so I don’t really mind it… But for a lot of women the thought of hairless legs would be a dream come true.  Now there are at home laser hair removal devices that you can get which can help make the dream a reality… However – always follow instructions and make sure you are a good candidate for laser hair removal first!

tria hair removal laser

Tria hair removal laser $449

Another tried and true alternative is waxing which can at least make your hair removal routine far less frequent… You could also use wax on your face but I think its best to leave eyebrows to the professionals…

Bliss at home waxing kit

Bliss at home waxing kit $48

As I said, eyebrows are best left to the professionals, but you could always clean them up a bit with my favorite beauty tool – the tweezerman tweezers – as a greek girl with a very thick dark brow I’ve had wax since I was 12 years old these tweezers are my greatest beauty companion.

tweezerman tweezers

Tweezerman tweeters $22

One last tip for hair removal is to make sure to have a great ingrown hair solution.  I have been using Tend Skin for year and swear by it!

tend skin

Tend Skin $20

BODY:

Two of the biggest beauty issues that women are often left with post baby are stretch marks and cellulite.  I was lucky enough to swerve the stretch marks thanks to my commitment to cocoa butter application but I definitely noticed and increase in cellulite…  Unfortunately, these are the 2 things there really is no real cure for.  Lasers have gotten better and can dramatically improve the look of both cellulite and stretch marks but its a more expensive solution.  Improved diet and exercise can help with cellulite as can deep tissue massages but there isn’t really a miracle cure.  Cellulite creams on the market can temporarily improve the look of skin texture and that might be the best non cosmetic procedure we’ve got.  Bliss has a product that has been quite popular and highly reviewed that uses caffeine to diminish the look of skin dimpling and Clarins also has a product that seems to work for a lot of people which actually also helps to prevent cellulite in the fist place….

Bliss fat girl slim

Bliss fat girl slim $36

clarins body lift cellulite control

Clarins body lift cellulite control $68

Nivea skin firming cellulite cream

Nivea skin firming cellulite cream $9.99

As for stretch markes – prevention is better than cure – so keeping the growing body moisturized is integral.  You don’t need to spend a lot of money – Palmer’s Cocoa Butter is the best!  Some even claim this can help reduce the look of stretch marks…

palmer's cocoa butter

Palmer’s cocoa butter $4.79

The sooner you combat existing stretch marks the better the results for sure!  Stretch marks do fade with time but getting a jump start and applying some of these topical lotions as soon as stretch marks appear is definitely the most effective way to treat them.

mustella stretch mark solution

Mustella stretch marks double action $41.99

Strivectin

Strivectin $139 (I actually use this on my face at the suggestion of a beauty editor I used to work with – and its great for preventing wrinkles!)

Like many other mother’s out there I ended up having a c-section which has left me with a sizable scar…  Nobody will ever see it but it does still bother me – Bio Oil is one of the great beauty fixes for diminishing the look for both scars and stretch marks.

bio oil

Bio Oil $14.59

One of my biggest beauty grievances is my pale pasty skin.  I live in California and I look like a ghost!  I simply don’t have the time to be lounging poolside and quite frankly, we all know that the only healthy tan is a fake tan!  Sunless tanners can leave you streaky and stinky – but St. Tropez are the beauty leaders in the sunless tanning world and this is my go-to bottle tan!  It’s a gradual tanner that you apply every day as your body moisturizers and it slowly and streaklessly builds a gorgeous tan without the fake tan smell!

St tropez sunless tanning

St. Tropez gradual moisturizer/tanner $30

NAILS:

One of my biggest complaints is the dryness of my hands…  I wash my hands constantly, not because I’m OCD but because it comes with the territory of having 3 dogs and a toddler.  I actually bought my Dad one of these paraffin baths awhile ago when he was doing physical therapy for a broken finger and I was slightly obsessed with it. Basically, its a hot wax bath for your hands and feet which locks in moisture and restores your skin to baby bottom soft!

beauty chic paraffin bath

Beauty Chic paraffin bath $39.99

Just like with our hair, our nails suffer post partum becoming brittle and unsightly.  There are some great products out there for moisturizing and restrengthening nails and cuticles.

Perfect Formula strong nail system

Perfect Formula strong nail system $29.50

One of my biggest complaints about manicures is that they just don’t last very long…  Gel manicures have become increasingly popular as they can last up to 3 weeks looking as fresh as the day they were done.  Of course, it still doesn’t solve the problem of getting out to have them done.. Well, now OPI has an at home gel kit that will allow you to get the long lasting gel manicure without leaving the house!  I should note that gel manicures are great but should not be done back to back as they can compromise the strength of your nails…  But how amazing to have beautifully manicured nails for a change?!?

sephora by OPI gel kit

Sephora by OPI gelshine at home gel color system $159 (PS – they have a great range of colors too!)

And of course, my beloved nail sticker appliqué sets which are fast, easy and with no dry time!  They’re definitely non-traditional but lots of fun that your kids will get a kick out of too!

sephora by OPI nail stickers

Sephora by OPI nail stickers $6
