MOMMA LOVES… shades of white accessories for us and them

Last week I did a post on shades of white clothing and I was SO amazed by what I saw I had to do a follow up post on all the amazing light colored accessories out there.  There crisp and fresh and brand new!  They are a must have for spring and give every look an elegant polish. It doesn’t matter what you put these white accessories with – color, black, more white – they will alway be the perfect final touch.  The abundance of white that’s now coming into stock indicates a huge trend approaching.  Most of the country has seen a lot of the white stuff due to the polar vortex and with spring approaching, get ready to see a lot more of it in our wardrobes!  White accessories are always a risk so make sure to scotch guard and leather protect to help keep them looking fresh.  Of course, I couldn’t forget our little ones – so there are plenty of white accessories to keep them looking their best… Until they find that mud puddle!

MOMMA LOVES… amazing animal print clothes for women and children

Last week I did a post on leopard print accessories…  So, of course, I had to follow it up with leopard print clothing this week.  There were SO many amazing leopard print items that I could have just post on that but I really wanted to include all the other incredibly cool animal print clothes that are out there.  From snakeskin to zebra to tiger prints – its a jungle out there in the fashion world!  Animal print clothes are so great because they are equal parts lady and cool – simultaneously modern yet classic – which means they pretty much look great on everyone!  One key point I have to mention is that you mustn’t ever wear head to toe animal print – this is a big fashion no no.  If you’re wearing a leopard print dress – there is no need to wear the leopard shoes and bag – and certainly no zebra pants with snakeskin print tops.  These prints are best as a pop – one statement piece per outfit!  That said, there truly is nothing chicer than a fabulous animal print and if you don’t already have an animal print in your wardrobe, it might be time.  Its the easiest way to look stylish effortlessly.  Jeans with a leopard print top to the park and you could still feel comfortable and casual while also looking pulled together.  And, how cute are the little ladies in a bit of leopard?  I couldn’t resist all the amazingly adorable animal prints for kids which is a really modern yet girly look.  Of course, there wasn’t much in the way of animal skin prints for the boys but I’ve not left them out… Scroll down to check out some great looks!

MOMMA LOVES… glider or rocking chair – nursery essential!

IMG_0793

First week of Max’s life and I’m not sure if the glider was rocking him or my poor sleep deprived husband to sleep!

A friend of mine came over the other day with her 3 month old and, as babies do, she started to fuss.  My friend removed herself from dinner and went into Max’s nursery and came out 5 minutes later (without baby – who was snoozing happily in Max’s crib) proclaiming “I need to get one of those rockers!”   Absolutely she does – without a doubt having a great glider or rocking chair is a MUST.  We spend so much time breast feeding, reading to our little ones, snuggling and rocking that is absolutely a nursery essential for both you and baby!  I confess I still rock max to sleep and its one of my favorite pieces of furniture in the house.  While pregnant (and going through my nesting phase) I searched high and low for a glider or rocking chair that wouldn’t just serve purpose but in the long run was a beautiful piece of furniture.  My Monte glider will be with us for the long haul – Max will now climb onto it himself when he’s tired and just snuggle up happily.  The glider or rocking chair has come a long way in recent years – they’re not the old fashioned style from days of yore – they’re chic, modern and incredibly comfortable!  Check out some of my top picks for a glider or rocking chair that will transform your child’s nursery and your life helping you soothe them to sleep in stylish comfort.

GOLDEN GLOBES RED CARPET STYLE REPORT

Last night was the Golden Globes and all the stars were out in their black tie best to celebrate the occasion.  I think its fair to say that the evening was full of plenty of glam!  I of course wanted to do a Golden Globes red carpet style report to discuss the trends and best dressed of the evening.  My best dressed of the evening was new comer and instant style icon, Lupita Nyongo’o in a stunning red Ralph Lauren caped gown.  Which brings me to my first big trend – the color red.  Various shades orangey undertones to deep red with blue undertones – these ladies put the red in red carpet!

photo 1-2

left to right: Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren, Amy Adams in Valentino Couture, Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Narciso Rodriguez and Emma Watson in Dior Couture

I would like to do an extra shout out to Emma Watson for her fashion risk of wearing a look that was dress in the front but layered over trousers and open in the back – it was daring, yes, but modern and completely age appropriate – she was absolutely one of my favorites!

Another huge (unsurprising) his of the evening was black.  No ordinary black, there was lace, tulle, beading, embellishment, gold accents and plenty of curvy silhouettes.  These were not your safe little black dresses – these were statement dresses (hello Sofia Vergara and Cate Blanchett – 2 more favorites).  These ladies put the black in black tie fabulous!

photo 2

left to right: Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive, Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen, Emma Roberts in Lanvin and Juliana Margulies in Andrew Gn

Another white hot trend was shades of light (as I call it).  The golden globes red carpet style could be seen from the moon it was emitting so much light.  There was white, cream, pale golds, nudes and silvers – whatever creative name you want to put on it – these gowns were glorious, ethereal and glowing.  2 of my favorites Naomi Watts (in Tom Ford) and new comer Margot Robbie (in Gucci) absolutely killed it in their body skimming light gowns.  Once again, there was nothing basic about these shades of light – there was lace, organza, beading and all the adornment you could expect from the biggest stars on one of the most prestigious red carpets…

photo 3

left to right: Naomi Watts in Tom Ford, Margot Robbie in Gucci, Emilia Clarke in Proenza Schouler and red carpet darling, Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture

While we’re talking about color, I need to talk about the color green – it wasn’t everywhere but it was pretty and present and in various hues and silhouettes.  I say silhouette because green was the color that two of my favorite expectant (and incredibly glamorous) ladies chose to style their bumps.  I am talking about Kerry Washington in the palest green Balenciaga and one of my very favorites of the night, Olivia Wilde in a sparkly Gucci gown.  I hate to use so many lame puns – but I was green with envy!

photo 3-2

Another hot Golden Globes red carpet style trend was color blocked gowns!  Color blocking has been a popular trend for a number of year but seeing it at the highest level in these incredible gowns was jaw dropping.  Yes, there was lots of black and white together – but the use of colors – both contrasting and tonal was magnificent and fresh.  Amy Adams absolutely killed it in Valentino Couture gown – another of my favorite looks – which featured 2 of the hot colors of the night – red and red!  This was definitely a big red carpet trend and great for ladies who are torn on what color to wear…

photo 2-2

left to right: Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung, Julie Bowen in Carolina Herrera, Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera and Aubrey Plaza in Oscar de la Renta

Finally, I want to talk about the surprise scene stealers of the night… I’m talking about shoes baby!  That’s right, most shoes don’t get much air time at these black tie red carpet events… These gorgeous heels are usually hidden behind layer so fabric which musty be frustrating for shoe designers and uncomfortable for the celebs wearing these incredible shoes without getting to show them off! This year we got lots and lots of shoe sightings on the Golden Globes red carpet thanks to some thigh high slits (thank you Amber Heard and Margot Robbie) but designers were definitely experimenting with some high low hemlines.  Everyone from Sandra Bullock, Zoe Deschanel to the expectant Drew Barrymore showed some ankle and shoe love in these high low hemlines.  Furthermore, there was more tea length than usual (which cuts just below the knee) which Sarah Paulson showed off in Marchesa as did Emma Thompson who actually came out to present an award carrying her sky high Christian Louboutins proclaiming the red was actually her blood.  So, congratulations to all those amazing shoe designers out there who finally got the exposure they deserve at these black tie events!

MATERNITY MONDAY… the best maternity clothes

The age old question of what to wear when you’re expecting has plagued women since the beginning of time.  How to dress a body that changes every day.  Back in our mom’s day the options were so limited they often just gave into wearing a mumu for much of pregnancy.  Today, it is quite a different story – options are no where near limited – in fact its almost hard to narrow down the best maternity clothes…  But here I am, week after week, sharing some amazing style options for those growing baby bumps!  Women no longer have to resort to wearing a tent or rummaging through their husband’s closet for things to wear – we have some of the best maternity clothes available to us that aren’t just comfortable (which lets face it of the utmost importance) but on trend and actually desirable!  You won’t want to stop wearing your maternity clothes after your little one arrives because they’re that great (which is convenient since it may take some time before you can squeeze back into your pre-baby jeans again).  So check out some of the best maternity clothes out there and enjoy styling that fabulous bump!

Golden Globes red carpet madness!

Flashback to one of my first posts on red carpet trends…  Its the Golden Globes today and Max and I are gearing up for some red carpet fun.  My prediction for the Golden Globes red carpet trends remains the same as it was several months ago – black, shades of white (from diamond white, to ivory to the palest colors) and shades of coral (from the pinkier to the more vibrant red orange hues) as well as lots of sheer, lace, embellishment and sexy!  See below for some of my favorite dresses from the F/W 2014 collections for looks I’m hoping to see on my favorite celebrities on the Golden Globes red carpet.  I’m looking forward to seeing what stylish mom nominees like Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock and Kate Winslet will being, not to mention those hilarious moms hosting the show – Tina Fey (a fellow greek) and Amy Poehler…  And of course, one of my favorite fashionistas – Kerry Washington is fully pregnant – how will she chose to style the bump?  I’m looking forward to all the Golden Globes red carpet hits, misses and bling!

MOMMA TIP… birthday cake idea!

Its a new year and there will surely be lots of Birthdays to celebrate!  I wanted to share with you guys a birthday cake idea I really had fun with…  I cannot believe my little prince will be turning 2 in June and I am already trying to plan!  For his first birthday I ordered him one of these edible photo cake toppers which everyone loved.  It was cute, inexpensive and easy!  I ordered ahead of time – made my own cake and just followed the instruction on how to apply the cake topper.  You can also get them for cookies and cupcakes!  This birthday cake idea is fun, creative and original!

MOMMA TIPS… beauty fixes

As a mom the first thing that went out of the window was the intense concentration I used to spend on my physical appearance.  Pedicures now happen half as often (manicures never anymore), hair cut and color maybe 2 or 3 times a year (heck I’m lucky if I get to wash my hair twice a week!) and facials are a thing of the past…  Sometimes I look in the mirror and cringe at my lack of upkeep and I know I need to carve out the time to focus more energy on myself.  I know I’m not alone in this and that we, as mothers, spend so much time caring for everyone else we forget about taking care of ourselves…  So, I wanted to do a post on beauty fixes – the various products and practices that will help cure our raggedy look.  I’ve focused on anti-aging remedies previously, but I wanted to shift focus from the wrinkles and dark circles and turn my attention to all the other beauty fixes we mommas need.  I’m talking about the grey hairs that are coming fast and furious, the hyper pigmentations (brown spots) that resulted from pregnancy, even a much needed teeth whitening…  We all have our insecurities – so here are some great beauty fixes to get the year started on a more beautiful (perhaps even pedicured) foot!

FACE:

One of the worst things about pregnancy was the hyperpigmentation that erupted all over my face.  Hyperpigmentation are the dark spots and uneven skin tone that happens to many women during pregnancy but it can also be caused by sun exposure and acne scars…  Its faded somewhat over time and I can cover them with makeup but I would be lying if I said they don’t bother me…  I talked to a dermatologist about it and he said that some creams do help but you have to use it consistently every day and it does take time.  The most effective method of eliminating them is a combination of creams and laser treatment by a dermatologist.  I know that there is still the possibility of having another baby sometime in the future so I’ll wait to try the lasers until then, but in the meantime I will be investing in this SkinCeuticals cream which my research and Allure magazine claims to be the best.

screenshot_1693

SkinCeuticals advanced pigment correction $90

clinique even better dark spot corrector

Clinique even better dark spot corrector $49.50 – $76

And while you’re waiting for spots to fade – a great full coverage concealer is great for masking your pregnancy mask…

makeup forever full coverage concealer

Makeup Forever full coverage concealer $32

Ugh, nothing is worse than getting those pesky pimples…  For me I get those deep set ones that hurt like crazy and stick around forever (or until I can get to the dermatologist).  The hormonal upheaval that results from having a baby can seriously throw skin out of wack and there are times I feel like a spotty teenager again…  I have found the Clarisonic system absolutely incredible at helping to deep clean my face which prevents them from happening in the first place!  Furthermore, having a regular routine to target skin issues such as the Neutrogena acne therapy system will help your skin looking its best.  For those breakouts that do occur the best product on the market is the Kate Sommerville Eradikate – put it on at night and by morning you’ll find spots significantly reduced!

Clarisonic system

Clarisonic system $169

neutrogena acne therapy system

Neutrogena acne therapy system $19.99

TEETH:

I live in LA – the land of pearly whites but mine are more of a pearly off-white…  I want to feel confident with my smile because I love to smile… So I think its time for some teeth whitening and there are so many great options that we can do right at home!

Glo Brilliant teeth whitening

GLO Brilliant teeth whitening device $199 (you have to buy the trays and gel separately)

GLO brilliant whitening gels

GLO Brilliant whitening gels $45

For a less expensive solution – good old fashion crest white strips are also great!

Crest 3D white strips

Crest 3D white strips $37.99

HAIR:

Yes, I’m going gray.  I suppose it comes with the whole getting older territory but those little white hairs make me nuts!  I also don’t like using harsh chemicals on my hair…  L’Oreal has a line of permanent hair color called Inoa which not only delivers great color, but is free of harsh chemicals and inexpensive!

L'oreal inoa hair color

L’Oreal Inoa permanent hair color $16.30

My hair grows very quickly so when I just want a quick root touch up I use this Clairol product which is quick and easy to apply (but only lasts a few weeks):

clairol root touch up

Clairol root touch up $5.50

For an even more temporary fix – this spray on gray hair concealer works magic!

rita hazan root coverage

Rita Hazan grey hair root concealer $25

My insanely long hair gets very little attention and sits up in a pony tail or bun most of the time so that it doesn’t get in the way…  As a result I often get intense tangles – dreadlocks tangle which are virtually impossible to get out without my handy Tangle Teezer.  I have posted about this amazing brush several times – but I am seriously obsessed with it.  I tell every hairdresser and mom to kids with long hair I meet about it because it quickly and painlessly gets out even the craziest tangles.  It is my absolute must have!

image1xl-1

Tangle Teezer $18.51

During pregnancy strange things happen to you – one of the craziest things is what happens to your hair!  Its thick and lustrous and you actually don’t shed it (as we all know we usually do).  Then, about 3 months post delivery it happens – all the hair you didn’t lose during those 9 months starts to come out like crazy!  I have a LOT of hair so you wouldn’t really notice (unless you shared a bathroom with me – sorry honey) but for a lot of women this hair loss can be incredibly traumatic and more noticeable – a great vitamin that’s specifically for hair and nails can be a great solution.  I will note, that I actually lost a clump of hair – all at once – about half the diameter of a dime – my hair stylist told me about (it was at the back of my head) and told me to consult with a doctor – and sure enough losing a clump of hair like that can be the sign of a thyroid issue which can be common post partum (which I indeed had).  So, keep an eye out for this sort of hair loss and talk to your doctor about getting that thyroid checked!

Phyto hair and nail supplement $59

HAIR REMOVAL:

A lot of women complain about shaving – and often this goes neglected…  I have to shave every day and I have to say, my shower time is often the only alone time I get and the time I come up with some of my best ideas so I don’t really mind it… But for a lot of women the thought of hairless legs would be a dream come true.  Now there are at home laser hair removal devices that you can get which can help make the dream a reality… However – always follow instructions and make sure you are a good candidate for laser hair removal first!

tria hair removal laser

Tria hair removal laser $449

Another tried and true alternative is waxing which can at least make your hair removal routine far less frequent… You could also use wax on your face but I think its best to leave eyebrows to the professionals…

Bliss at home waxing kit

Bliss at home waxing kit $48

As I said, eyebrows are best left to the professionals, but you could always clean them up a bit with my favorite beauty tool – the tweezerman tweezers – as a greek girl with a very thick dark brow I’ve had wax since I was 12 years old these tweezers are my greatest beauty companion.

tweezerman tweezers

Tweezerman tweeters $22

One last tip for hair removal is to make sure to have a great ingrown hair solution.  I have been using Tend Skin for year and swear by it!

tend skin

Tend Skin $20

BODY:

Two of the biggest beauty issues that women are often left with post baby are stretch marks and cellulite.  I was lucky enough to swerve the stretch marks thanks to my commitment to cocoa butter application but I definitely noticed and increase in cellulite…  Unfortunately, these are the 2 things there really is no real cure for.  Lasers have gotten better and can dramatically improve the look of both cellulite and stretch marks but its a more expensive solution.  Improved diet and exercise can help with cellulite as can deep tissue massages but there isn’t really a miracle cure.  Cellulite creams on the market can temporarily improve the look of skin texture and that might be the best non cosmetic procedure we’ve got.  Bliss has a product that has been quite popular and highly reviewed that uses caffeine to diminish the look of skin dimpling and Clarins also has a product that seems to work for a lot of people which actually also helps to prevent cellulite in the fist place….

Bliss fat girl slim

Bliss fat girl slim $36

clarins body lift cellulite control

Clarins body lift cellulite control $68

Nivea skin firming cellulite cream

Nivea skin firming cellulite cream $9.99

As for stretch markes – prevention is better than cure – so keeping the growing body moisturized is integral.  You don’t need to spend a lot of money – Palmer’s Cocoa Butter is the best!  Some even claim this can help reduce the look of stretch marks…

palmer's cocoa butter

Palmer’s cocoa butter $4.79

The sooner you combat existing stretch marks the better the results for sure!  Stretch marks do fade with time but getting a jump start and applying some of these topical lotions as soon as stretch marks appear is definitely the most effective way to treat them.

mustella stretch mark solution

Mustella stretch marks double action $41.99

Strivectin

Strivectin $139 (I actually use this on my face at the suggestion of a beauty editor I used to work with – and its great for preventing wrinkles!)

Like many other mother’s out there I ended up having a c-section which has left me with a sizable scar…  Nobody will ever see it but it does still bother me – Bio Oil is one of the great beauty fixes for diminishing the look for both scars and stretch marks.

bio oil

Bio Oil $14.59

One of my biggest beauty grievances is my pale pasty skin.  I live in California and I look like a ghost!  I simply don’t have the time to be lounging poolside and quite frankly, we all know that the only healthy tan is a fake tan!  Sunless tanners can leave you streaky and stinky – but St. Tropez are the beauty leaders in the sunless tanning world and this is my go-to bottle tan!  It’s a gradual tanner that you apply every day as your body moisturizers and it slowly and streaklessly builds a gorgeous tan without the fake tan smell!

St tropez sunless tanning

St. Tropez gradual moisturizer/tanner $30

NAILS:

One of my biggest complaints is the dryness of my hands…  I wash my hands constantly, not because I’m OCD but because it comes with the territory of having 3 dogs and a toddler.  I actually bought my Dad one of these paraffin baths awhile ago when he was doing physical therapy for a broken finger and I was slightly obsessed with it. Basically, its a hot wax bath for your hands and feet which locks in moisture and restores your skin to baby bottom soft!

beauty chic paraffin bath

Beauty Chic paraffin bath $39.99

Just like with our hair, our nails suffer post partum becoming brittle and unsightly.  There are some great products out there for moisturizing and restrengthening nails and cuticles.

Perfect Formula strong nail system

Perfect Formula strong nail system $29.50

One of my biggest complaints about manicures is that they just don’t last very long…  Gel manicures have become increasingly popular as they can last up to 3 weeks looking as fresh as the day they were done.  Of course, it still doesn’t solve the problem of getting out to have them done.. Well, now OPI has an at home gel kit that will allow you to get the long lasting gel manicure without leaving the house!  I should note that gel manicures are great but should not be done back to back as they can compromise the strength of your nails…  But how amazing to have beautifully manicured nails for a change?!?

Sephora by OPI gelshine at home gel color system $159 (PS – they have a great range of colors too!)

And of course, my beloved nail sticker appliqué sets which are fast, easy and with no dry time!  They’re definitely non-traditional but lots of fun that your kids will get a kick out of too!

MOMMA LOVES… a ray of light – shades of white clothes for us and them

Just because its winter doesn’t mean we have to rule out white clothes!  Fashion rules are always meant to be broken so forget all that no white after labor day stuff.  For those less adventurous – there are so many varying shades of white from soft pinks and grays to winter white and cream to choose from that will allow you to get the fresh look of summer even while the frost is upon us.  There may be snow on the ground but let the white inspire you and look forward to spring time ahead!  I have done my post on babies in black shown you plenty of little black dresses, but nothing looks as crisp and polished as white (plus it matches everything!) and there is just something about little ones dressed in white clothes that accentuates their beauty and innocence.  For women, white clothes are incredibly elegant and feminine and for our little boys and girls wearing white just punctuates their purity…  If you’re worried about whites getting dirty – fear not – it comes with the territory of motherhood…  You and your little ones can wear those stains proudly until you can get out your tide to go stain remover or home to throw everything into the wash!  FYI – my fashion friends and I swear by these tide pods for getting whites their whitest! Its a new year and a fresh beginning – why not start out 2014 with some classic whites?!  I have to tell you, this is one of the hardest posts I’ve done because there were just SOOOO many amazing things out there for both women and children it was really hard to narrow down…  PS – I would like to note that shades of light were a big hit on last night’s People’s Choice Awards red carpet.  Everyone from Jennifer Hudson to Jessica Alba to host  Beth Behr and so many more rocked varying hues of white making it an official trend.  So check out some of my favorite white clothes for us and them!
