MOMMA HURTS… dealing with the loss of a pet

So, yesterday, I love one of my best friends.  My beloved, adored, cherished companion, Gucci, my 11 year old Chihuahua.  We’ve been through so much together – she was always by my side – a model for Marie Claire on multiple occasions, a first class passenger on several cross atlantic flight, she approved my simon and was there for the wedding.  She was patient following the birth of my beloved Max.  Very sadly, she was diagnosed with mitral valve disease about 4 years ago which sent us into a tizzy.  We did all the research and saw multiple cardiologists and had her on a cocktail of medications to keep her healthy, reduced her stress levels to make sure her heart never went into over drive, reduced her salt intake to literally nothing (which meant max never ate anything with any salt since it would end up on the floor) and monitored her breathing several times a day every day over the last 4 years.  We would have done anything for her.  In fact, she died during a routine vet visit.  We took her and her 2 sister dogs in yesterday morning for their routine check up and she ultimately passed during her chest x-ray simply from the stress of being at the vet.  They did everything to save her, but to no avail.  She passed away because her heart was simply too big.  This is the truth.

I wanted to share this because I have just done a post on heart prints and love – and she was my first baby and one of my greatest loves.  Also, because I wanted to share some advice on dealing with the loss of a pet that I got from a fellow mom not too long ago. The advice was how to deal with children and the passing of a pet.  Max is truly still to young for a lot of this… But her words were wise…

1) When your pet passes, have an open conversation with your child.  It will probably be the first time your little one ever becomes aware of the concept of death.

2) After your pet has passed use definitive language.  This means, don’t use words like:  “gucci has gone away”  “gucci is in a better place”  or “gucci is no longer with us.”  This is too vague and  could insinuate that she might come back… Or that when you say you’re going away (lets say a business trip or what not) there could be the confusion that you might not come back..  Using words like “gucci died and we loved her very much and miss her” are fine, if you want to say “gucci went to heaven and she is with the angels” and then explain what heaven is and that’s where people go when they die (if that is what you believe) then that is fine too.  The key is to make sure to use finite language to avoid any misinterpretation..

3)  Its okay to cry in front of your little one.  Expressing emotion and sadness is good and therapeutic.  Its show your children that its okay to mourn and be sad.  But, also explain to your little one why you are crying,  “mommy is crying because she misses Gucci and is sad.  Being sad is okay and crying is okay because its how we deal with losing someone we love.”  This is important because it tells your little one that expressing emotion and handling grief is not something to bottle up or hide.

4)  Do not let your little one see you break down completely.  Believe me, in the last 18 hours my husband and I have been in and out of hysterics – its important to remove yourself from your child if this is coming on.  While it is okay for them to see you shed a tear, they don’t need to see you melt down.  As much as your heart is breaking over your loss – a break down could scare a child and make them feel very uneasy and scared.  If you feel like you can’t control the emotion, go to the bathroom or into another room until you can pull yourself together.

I will be honest.  I am broken right now. I wish I cold stop my hands from shaking, my heart from racing and my legs from wanting to give out from under me.  A friend of mine sent me this link about losing a pet that’s basically explained by a 6 year old.  To sum it up a family has to put their beloved family pet down and they decide it would be okay for their 6 year old to be with them when they did it.  Once the dog passed they were talking about how unfair it is that animals live such short lives and the little boys says that he knows why.  He says that we as humans are put on the earth to learn how to love and be kind and good and that dogs already know all of those things so they don’t need to stay as long…  Profound, true, beautiful and somewhat comforting.  My plan is to keep going and keep myself distracted with my 2 dogs, my darling baby boy, my husband and my work, allowing myself to cry and waiting for the total distress to eventually pass.  In the meantime – I wanted to share some photos of my beloved girl.  Dealing with the loss of a pet is one of the hardest things because all they ever want is to love you – they may be the only ones truly capable of unconditional love.  They enrich our life and teach us how to love.  Please feel free to share your comments below, thoughts on a pet that you may have lost and miss, or ways that you dealt with the loss of a pet and how you you managed it with your children.  Thank you for reading and never miss a moment to tell those close to you just how much you love them.

My little girl when I first got her back in New York in 2002 – her ears were so darn big and she was only 1 pound!

Gucci in Marie Claire

Gucci’s first modeling job for Marie Claire – she became the house model for a period of time… I mean, with that face she was in demand!

IMG_1199

She really was such a little love bug and when Simon and I first got together I think she thought he was her boyfriend…

maria3837

Simon and I married in 2006 and we had to have Gucci there to celebrate with us… She may have been the biggest hit of the night!

IMG00314-20090818-1229

Following the wedding and the honeymoon we moved from New York to London where Gucci met her new Rhodesian Ridgeback sisters, Shelby and Chili, for the first time. Make no mistake – she made sure everyone understood there was a new queen in town.

IMG_0631.JPG

This is her – you are not putting me in that bag – look. I though Gucci in Hermes would be quite fabulous…. But really she was tougher than that – she was “The Guch”

elfguch

Listen, i’m a stylist, and the cold weather in London meant Gucci had to wear a lot of sweaters, coats and the occasional elf costume.

IMG00045

2010 Gucci got back on that long journey across the pond – this time to sunny Los Angeles – she settled in nicely, worked on her tan and lost the winter weight happily spending plenty of time basking by the pool.

IMG_4812

Always glutinous – she was the first one to alert me to dinner time – with this look and stance….

IMG_1656

Max’s arrival might have been a bit confusing… A new little person meant less attention for all the pups – but then again, he was a secondary source of food – so she always kept close to the little man.

IMG_2481

She has always shared our bed… And when Max arrived she was kind enough to share some of her bed space with him when he would join us in the middle of the night…

IMG_6690

Max loves his car – Guch simply wanted to see what all the fuss was about… she just couldn’t reach the gas pedal…

IMG_1563

Max’s sidekick. She always knew wherever he was, we were, and we have 2 hands – one to play with him and one to pet her… often times we had both Gucci and Max on our laps at the same time..

IMG_5422

One of my all time favorite pictures… She was a real personality – for a small dog she sure could entertain, dominate, endear…. and I miss her like crazy.

MOMMA LOVES… heart prints – lets get ready for Valentines Day!

Valentines Day is once again upon us – it seems like the Christmas dust has only begun to settle and yet when I look around there are heart prints everywhere.   A holiday based on expressing your love for one another can’t be the worst thing and, to be fair, I really love heart prints.  I know I did a post a few months back on the love motif but I guess we could always use more love!  Children’s clothes will always feature plenty of love messages and heart prints because our children are the ultimate symbol of love but make no mistake there are lots of options for us as well!  Everything from jewelry to bags, shoes, tops and dresses feature the widely popular symbol of love and its will always be an iconic, wearable and feminine print.  I know this week I have been heavily focused on prints – but it just seems that women are looking for a way to wear their heart on their sleeves (ha ha ha – I couldn’t help myself).  But seriously, if what we wear can put a bit more love into the world why not celebrate it.  Heart prints will always be a popular, feel good trend.  Whether you’re looking for an understated heart shaped earring, or a sweater emblazoned with the L word there is something for everyone.  Nowhere are there more adorable heart prints than in baby and kids clothes – so get them ready for Valentines Day and share the love for the upcoming holiday!

MOMMA LOVES… tops that make a statement for moms and kids

Tops that make a statement have been popular for babies and kids for ages – there’s nothing quite so darling as a newborn baby in an I love my grandma onesie or even a ladies love me tee…  Its funny and sweet to dress our little ones in the words they can’t yet say.  But in a world where Twitter, Facebook and blogging has become so prevalent it was only a matter of time that making a statement translated into fashion.  Why tattoo our body with a thought or mantra when you could just where the t-shirt – it seems far less permanent…  That said, I’m with stupid and various other not so elegant slogan tees have been around for ages too – but that’s not what I’m talking about.  These tops are witty, thoughtful, and far more beautifully designed.  This is not your tourist tee – these tops that make a statement are done in beautiful clean fonts and without too much fuss – the wearability is in the simplicity.  The statements might be in french and they might be somewhat suggestive – but they shouldn’t say anything you wouldn’t want out there in the world.  Love, peace, and a bit of silliness never hurt anyone – its essentially a great take on your basics.   Rather than wearing a plain tee or sweatshirt the tops with text allow you to have a bit of fun while still being casual, relaxed and even stylish.  Alexander Wang sent a statement top down his f/w 2014 collection with Parental Advisory emblazoned on the front and this look was immediately knocked off before his version could make it to stores indicating just how mass this style has gotten.  Celebrities have been rocking this trend often as away to make a statement without saying a word when trailed by the paparazzi.  Again, the key to wearing these tops is to fun with it but always keep it simple.  For the mom’s put something positive in the world – it should go without saying, but never feature anything offensive or with swear words! As for our little ones – tops that make a statement are always going to be popular and a great way to inject some humor into their style.  Here are some of my favorite tops with something to say…

MOMMA WANTS… fashion stripes – always classic for women and children

Fashion stripes will always be in vogue.  Much like the little black dress, there will always be room in every wardrobe for stripes.  They’re classic but can be worn in so many different styles from preppy to boho to edgy – whatever your personal style there is a fashion stripe for you.  Horizontal, vertical, wide or skinny there is no end to the style within the style.  One of the chicest yet easiest looks to pull of is a simple striped breton top with a pair of jeans (for those unfamiliar – breton is your classic striped top which got its name when the striped knit top was part of the french naval uniform back  in the 1800′s which Coco Chanel then incorporated into her designs).   There is simply nothing cleaner and more elegant than that look – you could be kate moss or middleton and pull off the same style without ever losing a bit of yourself.  Some women may fear that fashion stripes can give the illusion of being larger but really that depends on the cut and style of the look.  For those who want to give the illusion of appearing thinner and taller vertical stripe pants are always a great option!  Of course, as effortlessly elegant and pulled together as we look in stripes – our little ones look just as cute!  I love little boys and girls in stripes – I remember when Max got his first breton tee as a baby and it will always be one of my favorite looks.  Sweet, innocent and when I can’t see straight from lack of sleep at putting him in those classic stripes is the easiest go-to outfit…

MOMMA TIPS… cold and flu solutions for your little ones

Yup, we are deep in the throws of cold and flu season people.  Talk about miserable.  If you  and your family haven’t gotten your flu shot it might be time to start thinking about it…  That said, there really is no cure for the common cold…  It can be debilitating or just annoying for us – but for our little ones it endlessly frustrating.  They don’t understand what’s happening – they’re uncomfortable, congested and just plain miserable…  Yes, you can always give them baby tylenol or, once they’re old enough, baby Motrin which helps…  But, like many parents, I know I don’t feel particularly comfortable over medicating and I’m constantly in search of cold and flu solutions to make my little one more comfortable during illness… One solution are the Hylands baby tiny cold tablets which seem to help some and they’re homeopathic so I rest a bit easier!

hylands cold tablets

Hylands baby homeopathic cold tablets $8

If you are still breast feeding your little one – there is NO question that breast milk is not only the best for keeping a cold and flu at bay but also creating the antibodies for both you and your little one to fight these illnesses quickly and effectively.  It is truly the miracle drug every pharmaceutical company wishes they could bottle.

Always be aware if your baby/child is acting different or uncomfortable – depending on their age they might not be able to tell you that they have a sore throat or are feeling achy…  Its not too hard – you will know when they are congested or coughing or throwing up or have diarrhea – but make sure to monitor their temperature and don’t be afraid to take them to their pediatrician just to make sure its not a bacterial infection…  Look for things like tugging at ears because this could be signs of an ear infection and if you’re child’s illness is bacterial it probably requires a course of antibiotics.  In the event of vomiting and/or diarrhea the worry is dehydration so talk to your doctor about how to rehydrate.  Breast milk, milk, water, pedialyte and gatorade may be good options depending on your little one’s age.

With the common cold – which in most cases is what your child has – its just a matter of waiting it out and making sure it doesn’t develop into and infection (kids often have colds that turn into ear infections).  All you can do is try to make your little one as comfortable as possible during this time and here are some cold and flu solutions that I have found quite helpful during my little guy’s times of need.

The worst part about cold and flu can be the nasal congestion which just seems to last forever!  We know that blowing our noses will help but try telling that to babies and toddlers who haven’t figured out blowing and will run a mile when then tissue comes out…  So the best we can do is help get some of that snot out for them.  This is best done with a saline nasal spray/drops which loosens the mucus and an aspirator to suck out the snot…  Sometimes as an alternative to the nasal spray I will run the shower hot for awhile to steam up the bathroom and take some toys into there with my little guy and let the steam work its magic loosening up the mucus…  and then of course follow up with the aspirator.

little remedies nasal saline drops

Little Remedies nasal saline drops $3.79

Nose frida nasal aspirator

Nose Frida nasal aspirator $15.99

Nasal Clear nasal aspirator $29.99

I also like to put one of his soft baby bibs on him while he has a runny nose – I use it to wipe up the snot as it comes out – I find this easier that trying to chase him with a tissue and much softer on his little baby nose…  Of course make sure to change them throughout the day and wash them well!

Aden + Anais bibs

Aden + Anais (set of 3) bibs $19.95

Vapor rub is amazing at opening up nasal passages and allowing little one to sleep better.  The baby rub formulas use essential oils like eucalyptus and lavender to help clear up congestion.  I use the Vicks baby rub on his chest and back and on the soles of his feet and it really does help!  Check on the age that you can start putting the rub on chest and back (some people like to wait until baby is a bit older to put it there) but for some reason applying this rub to the soles of the feet is incredibly effective!

Vicks baby rub 3 pack

Vicks baby rub 3 pack $14.73

A humidifier.  This just adds a bit of moisture in the air to help loosen mucus and help reduce congestion.  This is key to helping little one sleep more comfortably.  It also has a nice hum to it and a little white noise never hurts!  Some humidifiers (like the ones by Vicks) have scented pads which release a vapor into the air to help clear nasal passages.

Vicks germ free humidifier

Vicks germ free humidifier $80.99

For those who can’t be bothered with cleaning and refilling a humidifier there are also waterless options now which will release vapors into the air to help little one breathe more easily.

vicks waterless vaporizer

Vicks waterless vaporizer $11.59

vicks plug in waterless vaporizer

Vicks plug in waterless vaporizer $11.49

vicks baby scent pads

Vicks baby scent vapoPads $5.99

Elevating their heads.  We all know about gravity, well the best way to try to make sure all that fluid that builds up in our heads during a cold drains downward is to elevate it.  For children that are old enough for pillows – perhaps putting an extra pillow under there head could help.  For those not old enough – there is an amazing wedge which you can put under little one’s mattress so that they are on a slight incline which will help with drainage…

candide baby wedge

Candide baby wedge $60.99

Another solution would be to put a books or magazines under the legs of little one’s crib just to create a couple inches of incline.

Finally, one of the best cold and flu solutions is giving your little one as much TLC as possible – lists of cuddles, kisses, patience and love will give him or her comfort through the misery and its never the worst thing to have extra snuggles….

MOMMA WANTS… Rag & Bone digital print sweatpants

Happy Friday everyone!  I had to share my latest amazing momma want… These are the Rag & Bone digital print sweatpants that look like distressed jeans.  Yes, Its one part awful but mostly fabulous because of how cute and comfortable they are!  Distressed denim boyfriend jeans are incredibly popular and the Rag & Bone digital print sweatpants take that look but translate the print to comfy doze sweatpants!  They’re sexy, slouchy and messy enough that they can hide all the stuff our children throw at us!  Imagine them styled with heels and a little white t-shirt for a night out on the  town, or with a pair of converse and t-shirt for a trip to the park.  Chic and comfortable – its a win win situation!

MOMMA LOVES… Orange crush – great orange options for us and them

As you may have noticed, I like orange.  I always like a pop of color – but orange is so special because its a statement but it doesn’t have the girly-ness of pink or the look at me of red – its a unisex color with a bit of an edge.  Its vibrant and modern and it just makes me smile.  Its just  great contrasting color to pair with shades of white, denim, or even color blocked with colors like pink and purple.  I’m not talking about an orange overhaul – it might be a pop of orange print, and orange bag or just an orange lipstick…  It brings light to the face because it has such warm undertones and I absolutely love dressing Max in orange.  The beauty of orange is its also unisex – so when we were decorating his nursery and even when I’m shopping for his clothes I know orange will go a lot further (if we happened to ever have a girl).  I also like it because its easy to keep an eye on Max when he’s wearing a bright pop of color.  So, here it is – some of my favorite orange options for women and children!
