MOMMA LOVES… tie dyed clothes for a modern boho look

eh, who am I kidding we live in LA!

Its been a frigid winter for much of the country – but Spring is upon us and as the weather warms up snow will be rain (at least for a little while) and its time for rain coats and boots! I’m talking waterproof trench coats and wells to keep us and our little ones dry but not being afraid to dance in the rain. There is nothing my little ones loves more than jumping in puddles… which is sad considering we live in LA and it’s rained twice in the last year… But he seeks out a little divot in the driveway where water collects from the sprinkler and he goes for it every day. So, for all those ladies that are getting ready for April showers (on a bright note – they do bring May flowers!) I wanted to share some super chic rain coats and boots that actually make me long for the days we were living in London (and rain coats and boots were part of my daily uniform). MOMMA LOVES… ruffles for women and their mini-me’s

Sorry, I couldn’t resist the obvious “Ruffles” reference picture… Always chic and feminine for the ladies and yummy too!

Believe it or not – I love ruffles. I am not a girly girl dresser – you will most certainly see me in jeans about 50 times more than you will see me in a dress, but a little flourish I can’t resist. Ruffles often insinuate sweetness – which they can be (and there is nothing wrong with that – especially with little girl clothes) – but in actual fact there is so much more to ruffles. They can be modern, architectural, bohemian, ironic and, of course, feminine. A ruffled mini with a distressed tee and some great ankle boots or a pair of skinny jeans with a ruffled top give that perfect effortlessly elegant look. I describe my personal style as classic with a twist – sugar and spice – and a great piece with some well placed ruffles can be the perfect item to give your look that extra something it needs. Its a fun, flirty look that can be dressed up for all those summer time weddings we have to look forward to or dressed down for a casual afternoon at the park…. For our little ones, nothing could be cuter than ruffles – dresses bloomers, skirts (tutus!) and tops all look that much daintier with a little flourish (plus easter is coming up -ruffles are perfect for your little lady). MOMMA LOVES… neon clothes for us and our little ones!

I love neon clothes. This may sound crazy from someone who’s daily uniform usually consists of black, white and grey – but I am a HUGE fan of a pop of unexpected brights. Not just some smattering of a bland color – but a committed, eye catching highlighter hue. Neon clothes just capture my attention and they’re so bright they actually shine a bit of light into our lives and can put a smile on my face. Whenever I’m wearing a fluorescent piece I always get compliments – its something different, unexpected and fun. It could just be something as subtle as a hot pink tee paired with a blazer and jeans or something a bit more adventurous (but not too serious) like a chartreuse fit and flare dress… Neon clothes give your skin a warm glow and adds a bit more color into the world – added bonus you and your little ones have it that much easier keeping an eye on each other at the playgrounds! MOMMA LOVES… the sporty trend for us and them!

So, a few days ago I did a post on perforated clothes and accessories which is really part of a much larger trend – the sporty trend. Athletic inspired clothing was everywhere on the runway and the great thing about this look is that it allows us to be stylish while also being super comfortable and able to chase our little ones. The sporty trend isn’t necessarily literal – I’m not saying to throw on you gym clothes and voila! Its all about the overall look and feel of an item - a sexy slouchy track pant, a baseball tee, a bomber jacket, or even just something with a more athletic fabric, detail or silhouette. The key is to still look feminine but bringing in a relaxed athletic element. Mixing a sporty trend piece with a slouchy silk sweatpants with some great heels and a blazer can take you from the office to a dinner on the town, yet its comfortable and casual enough to pair with a simple tee and sneakers for an activity with your little one. For our kids this look is ideal because its, cute, comfortable and allows them to do all the climbing, running, jumping and various other mischief they get into on a daily basis. Max and I are in our black and white – classic, playful, chic and always in style!

Black and white clothes (as in both together in on piece) have been enormously popular on the runway, red carpet and in every store imaginable. They work because the look is crisp, elegant, timeless and so easy to wear. Black and white clothes can be worn as easily in the winter as they can be in summer, which is key this time of year when you’re desperate to transition into spring but practical enough to know that whatever you buy still needs to work with your tired winter wardrobe. Black and white will always be classic, never go out of style and, generally, matches everything – making these pieces always wearable, the fact that they are super on trend is the added bonus. MOMMA IS… mad about plaid!

Once upon a time plaid was reserved for the cooler fall and winter months and relegated to thicker materials such as flannel but, while that will always be true, it has also been reinvented for the spring and summer months in lighter colors and fabrics. That’s right, plaid is hot for spring and the widely popular tartan print can be found in everything from your traditional button front to dresses and blouses in silk and chiffon. Plaid is always sweet on our little ones but it can also be incredibly sophisticated and elegant for us! MOMMA LOVES… skinny jeans – they aren’t going anywhere!

Me in my Blank Denim skinnies and Max in his 7 For all Mankind …

Skinny jeans are a part of my uniform. The perfect pair is my second skin and I am constantly on the search for what works best for me – what new shades of blue are out there and do I need a new pair of black, gray, white or the hot new color of the season. That said, I know for a lot of women, skinny jeans are scary – but they shouldn’t be! Consider this, our skinniest area is our ankle so why not show them off – women should embrace their curves and skinny jeans help to show them off. Of course, there are many versions of skinny jeans – there’s even a slouchy skinny boyfriend jeans so the fact is – skinny doesn’t have to mean skin tight, lay down on your bed to do the top button! Another great thing about skinny jeans is that you can wear any shoe with them – boots fit perfectly over them and you can wear them with your flattest flats or your highest heels without having to worry about the height of your hems! Skinny jeans are so versatile that depending on how you choose to style them they transition easily from the office to the park to a night out on the town and from winter to spring! Of course, blue jeans in the office should be reserved for casual friday (depending on your corporate dress code) but other shades of denim can look very dressed up! Skinny jeans are a go-to favorite and a must have (in multiples) for every wardrobe for both us and our little ones! MOMMA LOVES… color block clothes for women and children

Color block clothes have been immensely popular over the last few years and show no sign of losing steam. Its a brilliant way for designers to experiment with colors and color combinations in a very safe, sophisticated, controlled way and it allows the consumer to do the same. Color block clothes may be as simple as blocks of black, white and gray, or play with non traditional color combos like purple and red. Clothes could be blocked tonally within the same color group or be on opposite ends of the spectrum – the blocking could even put together a neon color with a contrasting pastel color – there are no limits to the various combinations. For those who feel as though they can’t wear a certain color this gives them a way to experiment with a color they may have previously disregarded. Color block clothes are poppy and make a strong fashion statement but in a very wearable almost conservative way. Incredibly chic for the office or relaxed for a weekend with the kids there are variations on this color block trends to service every need and style, not to mention they’re super cute on our children.
