MOMMA LOVES… heart prints – lets get ready for Valentines Day!

Valentines Day is once again upon us – it seems like the Christmas dust has only begun to settle and yet when I look around there are heart prints everywhere. A holiday based on expressing your love for one another can’t be the worst thing and, to be fair, I really love heart prints. I know I did a post a few months back on the love motif but I guess we could always use more love! Children’s clothes will always feature plenty of love messages and heart prints because our children are the ultimate symbol of love but make no mistake there are lots of options for us as well! Everything from jewelry to bags, shoes, tops and dresses feature the widely popular symbol of love and its will always be an iconic, wearable and feminine print. I know this week I have been heavily focused on prints – but it just seems that women are looking for a way to wear their heart on their sleeves (ha ha ha – I couldn’t help myself). But seriously, if what we wear can put a bit more love into the world why not celebrate it. Heart prints will always be a popular, feel good trend. Whether you’re looking for an understated heart shaped earring, or a sweater emblazoned with the L word there is something for everyone. MOMMA LOVES… tops that make a statement for moms and kids

Tops that make a statement have been popular for babies and kids for ages – there’s nothing quite so darling as a newborn baby in an I love my grandma onesie or even a ladies love me tee… Its funny and sweet to dress our little ones in the words they can’t yet say. But in a world where Twitter, Facebook and blogging has become so prevalent it was only a matter of time that making a statement translated into fashion. Why tattoo our body with a thought or mantra when you could just where the t-shirt – it seems far less permanent… That said, I’m with stupid and various other not so elegant slogan tees have been around for ages too – but that’s not what I’m talking about. These tops are witty, thoughtful, and far more beautifully designed. This is not your tourist tee – these tops that make a statement are done in beautiful clean fonts and without too much fuss – the wearability is in the simplicity. The statements might be in french and they might be somewhat suggestive – but they shouldn’t say anything you wouldn’t want out there in the world. Love, peace, and a bit of silliness never hurt anyone – its essentially a great take on your basics. Rather than wearing a plain tee or sweatshirt the tops with text allow you to have a bit of fun while still being casual, relaxed and even stylish. Alexander Wang sent a statement top down his f/w 2014 collection with Parental Advisory emblazoned on the front and this look was immediately knocked off before his version could make it to stores indicating just how mass this style has gotten. Celebrities have been rocking this trend often as away to make a statement without saying a word when trailed by the paparazzi. Again, the key to wearing these tops is to fun with it but always keep it simple. For the mom’s put something positive in the world – it should go without saying, but never feature anything offensive or with swear words! MOMMA WANTS… fashion stripes – always classic for women and children

Fashion stripes will always be in vogue. Much like the little black dress, there will always be room in every wardrobe for stripes. They’re classic but can be worn in so many different styles from preppy to boho to edgy – whatever your personal style there is a fashion stripe for you. Horizontal, vertical, wide or skinny there is no end to the style within the style. One of the chicest yet easiest looks to pull of is a simple striped breton top with a pair of jeans (for those unfamiliar – breton is your classic striped top which got its name when the striped knit top was part of the french naval uniform back in the 1800′s which Coco Chanel then incorporated into her designs). There is simply nothing cleaner and more elegant than that look – you could be kate moss or middleton and pull off the same style without ever losing a bit of yourself. Some women may fear that fashion stripes can give the illusion of being larger but really that depends on the cut and style of the look. For those who want to give the illusion of appearing thinner and taller vertical stripe pants are always a great option! Of course, as effortlessly elegant and pulled together as we look in stripes – our little ones look just as cute! I love little boys and girls in stripes – I remember when Max got his first breton tee as a baby and it will always be one of my favorite looks. Sweet, innocent and when I can’t see straight from lack of sleep at putting him in those classic stripes is the easiest go-to outfit…

MOMMA LOVES… Orange crush – great orange options for us and them

As you may have noticed, I like orange. I always like a pop of color – but orange is so special because its a statement but it doesn’t have the girly-ness of pink or the look at me of red – its a unisex color with a bit of an edge. Its vibrant and modern and it just makes me smile. Its just great contrasting color to pair with shades of white, denim, or even color blocked with colors like pink and purple. I’m not talking about an orange overhaul – it might be a pop of orange print, and orange bag or just an orange lipstick… It brings light to the face because it has such warm undertones and I absolutely love dressing Max in orange. The beauty of orange is its also unisex – so when we were decorating his nursery and even when I’m shopping for his clothes I know orange will go a lot further (if we happened to ever have a girl). I also like it because its easy to keep an eye on Max when he’s wearing a bright pop of color. So, here it is – some of my favorite orange options for women and children!

MOMMA LOVES… shades of white accessories for us and them

Last week I did a post on shades of white clothing and I was SO amazed by what I saw I had to do a follow up post on all the amazing light colored accessories out there. There crisp and fresh and brand new! They are a must have for spring and give every look an elegant polish. It doesn’t matter what you put these white accessories with – color, black, more white – they will alway be the perfect final touch. The abundance of white that’s now coming into stock indicates a huge trend approaching. Most of the country has seen a lot of the white stuff due to the polar vortex and with spring approaching, get ready to see a lot more of it in our wardrobes! White accessories are always a risk so make sure to scotch guard and leather protect to help keep them looking fresh. Of course, I couldn’t forget our little ones – so there are plenty of white accessories to keep them looking their best… Until they find that mud puddle!

MOMMA LOVES… amazing animal print clothes for women and children

Last week I did a post on leopard print accessories… So, of course, I had to follow it up with leopard print clothing this week. There were SO many amazing leopard print items that I could have just post on that but I really wanted to include all the other incredibly cool animal print clothes that are out there. From snakeskin to zebra to tiger prints – its a jungle out there in the fashion world! Animal print clothes are so great because they are equal parts lady and cool – simultaneously modern yet classic – which means they pretty much look great on everyone! One key point I have to mention is that you mustn’t ever wear head to toe animal print – this is a big fashion no no. If you’re wearing a leopard print dress – there is no need to wear the leopard shoes and bag – and certainly no zebra pants with snakeskin print tops. These prints are best as a pop – one statement piece per outfit! That said, there truly is nothing chicer than a fabulous animal print and if you don’t already have an animal print in your wardrobe, it might be time. Its the easiest way to look stylish effortlessly. Jeans with a leopard print top to the park and you could still feel comfortable and casual while also looking pulled together. And, how cute are the little ladies in a bit of leopard? I couldn’t resist all the amazingly adorable animal prints for kids which is a really modern yet girly look. MOMMA LOVES… a ray of light – shades of white clothes for us and them

Just because its winter doesn’t mean we have to rule out white clothes! Fashion rules are always meant to be broken so forget all that no white after labor day stuff. For those less adventurous – there are so many varying shades of white from soft pinks and grays to winter white and cream to choose from that will allow you to get the fresh look of summer even while the frost is upon us. There may be snow on the ground but let the white inspire you and look forward to spring time ahead! I have done my post on babies in black shown you plenty of little black dresses, but nothing looks as crisp and polished as white (plus it matches everything!) and there is just something about little ones dressed in white clothes that accentuates their beauty and innocence. For women, white clothes are incredibly elegant and feminine and for our little boys and girls wearing white just punctuates their purity… If you’re worried about whites getting dirty – fear not – it comes with the territory of motherhood… You and your little ones can wear those stains proudly until you can get out your tide to go stain remover or home to throw everything into the wash! FYI – my fashion friends and I swear by these tide pods for getting whites their whitest! Its a new year and a fresh beginning – why not start out 2014 with some classic whites?! I have to tell you, this is one of the hardest posts I’ve done because there were just SOOOO many amazing things out there for both women and children it was really hard to narrow down… PS – I would like to note that shades of light were a big hit on last night’s People’s Choice Awards red carpet. Everyone from Jennifer Hudson to Jessica Alba to host Beth Behr and so many more rocked varying hues of white making it an official trend. MOMMA LOVES… peplum

Peplum, for those unfamiliar, refers to when a garment has a short skirt-like attachment which creates an hour glass silhouette. It has made and enormous resurgence recently and can be seen on the runway, on celebrities and in every store for both women and their little ladies. The fit and flare look is always incredibly feminine yet also (conveniently) quite forgiving. The peplum attachment is often featured on tops, jackets, skirts as well as dresses and is simultaneously sexy, sweet and elegant. The silhouette is one part va va voom yet at the same time can help conceal the extra couple of pounds we might have packed on during the holidays – its basically a win win! The key to styling it is to pair a peplum item with something with a slimmer cut (a pencil skirt, skinny pant, fitted top) in order to create the always desirable fit and flare shape. It is equally adorable on our little girls – almost like a toned down tutu. The extra flounce of fabric gives an added girly-ness to any outfit which your mini-me will surely love! MOMMA PLEASE… sweatshirts for kids

Kids don’t have the same problems as we do as far as what to pair with leggings – those skinny little get away sticks (as my friend hilariously calls them) look adorable with just about anything!
