MOMMA NEEDS… lightweight sweaters for all seasons

It is still very cold in much of the country and, believe it or not, in Southern California we are having our first taste of it so having great lightweight sweaters that we can layer through the winter and then see us through spring are a must have. Lightweight sweaters are fantastic because you can wear them over other tops and under big coats to give you an extra bit of protection from the frost but when the weather changes they’re super chic and easy to wear on their own. Another great advantage is that they’re light and easy to throw in your bag for both you and your little ones you’re prepared for whatever shifts in temperature may come. These lightweight sweaters aren’t making a statement – they’re not setting a trend – they’re a necessity and a classic. Yes, they’re chic and simply elegant but they’re also just comfortable and practical. There are, of course, plenty of great ways to wear to bring across your personal style – layers over a crisp button front blouse or with chunky statement jewelry or just casually with a pair of skinny jeans and boots – no matter what your style or your lifestyle lightweight sweaters are always a great investment for both you and your little ones! MOMMA WANTS.. jumpsuits – chic and stylish for us and cute and comfy for them!

Jumpsuits are one of the hottest trends right now, and rightfully so, incredibly chic, easy and cool. They’re fantastic transitional pieces that can take you from winter into spring and they make getting dressed super easy because they’re just one piece! The styling is pretty much done for you – its like wearing a dress with extra coverage and more mobility! Jumpsuits are so easy to dress up or down – you could wear them with fabulous flats for a playdate with your little on or dress them up with heels for the office or a dinner date. They’re one piece with plenty of versatility, and who doesn’t want to make their wardrobes go further without too much fuss? Jumpsuits are streamline, relaxed yet stylish and elongate your whole body so you look long, lean and incredibly cool. The menswear trend has been so popular, so this gives you that touch of comfortable men’s styling without losing any femininity! Of course, our kids grow up in one pieces! MOMMA LOVES… printed pants for women and kids!

As you may have noticed – prints are king at the moment in fashion, and one of my FAVORITE trends are the printed pants. I’m generally a classic minimalist when it comes to color, silhouettes and prints but I have fallen in love with the slouchy, almost pajama style printed pants. They are the easiest things to throw one with a t-shirt and look incredible! These printed pants are chic and incredibly elegant without ever being overly fussy. Pair them with a simple t-shirt, blazer and heels and you’re ready for the office or a date night – just change the heel to a flat and throw on a sweater instead of a blazer and you’re comfortable enough to roll around in the park with your little one. The silhouette vary from skinny to wide legged to a slouchy track pant style but the over all look and feel is the same – comfy yet stylish – a win win in my book every time. Of course, our kids have been braving printed pants forever – always cute and special (while also helping to camouflage food and dirt stains) they’re a staple in our little one’s wardrobes and now our’s as well! MOMMA NEEDS… jackets that can transition from winter to spring

As I have mentioned before, I have a slight addiction to jackets. They’re the perfect item in every wardrobe – they can transition your from desk to date, the park to brunch and from the polar vortex of a winter into the much anticipated spring time. Chic, well tailored jackets are always in style, always look amazing and can transform even the most ordinary outfit in to street chic perfections! MOMMA LOVES… power colors (red and bright pink) for V-DAY!

Happy Valentines Day everyone! In honor of a day that celebrates love – I wanted to do a post on those lovely power colors – red and bright pink! Red has been THE power color forever (I mean, you only have to look at the RED carpet trends recently to know that) but pink is one of the hot new power colors that will get you noticed and make a statement! Yes it can be feminine and girly – but I’m talking about the bright, electric, neon shades of pink that exude confidence and strength. Whether in the work place, at home or out on the town wearing these bold hues will always get attention and appreciation. The warmth in red and bright pinks will illuminate skin tone and give you that glow usually reserved for pregnancy and oxygen facials! I always say, bright color will get you noticed in a sea of black, and that is particularly beneficially when you have a little on you’re always trying to keep an eye on (and so they always know how to find you!). So, celebrate valentines day and every day by investing in some great power colors for both you and your little one – and don’t be afraid to wear your heart on your sleeve this valentines day – being strong also means letting your loved ones know how much you care!

MOMMA NEEDS… non skinny jeans for women and children

So, skinny jeans have been in for several years now… They are not showing any sign of going anywhere any time soon. I like skinny jeans, I think they’re great and I think they are flattering on most body types – but I also think its time to change it up and look for some non skinny jeans. A lot of women may not feel comfortable in the skin tight jeans that have dominated the market – so I wanted to do a post on all the amazing non skinny jeans option out there to keep you comfortable and looking your best! The denim market is so enormous and such a huge part of every wardrobe so its important that we all find our perfect pair. Non skinny jeans could mean a flared leg, a wide leg or even just a more subtle boot cut – all incredibly wearable and chic. I actually get so many compliments when I wear my flares because they actually are so flattering and people aren’t used to see in the silhouette! Non skinny jeans are also great for our little ones because, lets face it, getting them dressed can be a hard enough challenge without having to find a way to shimmy up a pair of skinnies! MOMMA LOVES… polka dots

Polka dots are hardly a trend and more of a staple. Feminine, sweet and yet effortlessly cool there is something about polka dots that keeps us coming back for more. They’re classic and safe but there’s noting twee about these spots. Now a days they’re more graphic, bold, varied and interesting. Polka dots are great graphic prints which feel safe and familiar yet they can still be strong and modern. Whether you like pretty and preppy or prefer a bit of an edge there are polka dots for every style that can take you from the office to the park to a night out on the town. This print is fun and easy to wear – perfect on our little ladies because they have that feminine youthful appeal but they can still be grown up and sophisticated for us momma’s as well! MOMMA LOVES… the peasant blouse

Max and I in our peasant blouses… Max’s actually came from his Papou’s last trip to Greece!

The peasant blouse is both simple yet chic and beautiful. There’s a nostalgia about it – a peasant blouse always take me back to my childhood when my mom would dress me in smocked dresses (which she would make herself) and little embroidered blouses which seemed to highlight my greek heritage… There is a bohemian simplicity to the look which allows it to be referential yet still very modern. The peasant blouse will always be popular among women and children because its comfortable, sweet and feminine without being overly fussy. Its timeless and while it may have been what my Greek ancestors wore on a little island over a hundred years ago, it is also what I wear today. Whether I’m running errands or going out for dinner – its universal appeal has never wavered. You really can’t tell whether a peasant blouse was bought from Barneys or on the side of a road in Spain. In fact, you will find that a lot of designers who feature a peasant blouse in their collections were inspired from their travels. Its funny to think back to the peasant blouses of my childhood and see that those tops are still as ever present in the kids market today. I love the boho baby look an the peasant blouse is the easiest way to accomplish the look. Of course, for little boys, it may be more about the fabric, the fit or overall feel – clearly there is not a huge market for boys blouses, but check out some of my favorite peasant blouses for us and our mini-me’s!

MOMMA NEEDS… distressed denim for women and kids

I love my distressed denim. They’re cool, comfortable and nobody would know that my little max just wiped his hands all over them. My dad would look at me and huff, “I hope you didn’t pay full price for those – they’ve got holes in them!” but you can’t please everyone. Distressed denim once again delivers that effortless look but these are not the shapeless shredded jeans from the 80′s – today’s look is tailored and sexy yet worn and torn. Denim designers have gone to great lengths to insure that their jeans look naturally distressed without losing their fit. Throw them on with a relaxed tee and pair of sneakers or boots for the park and then change into heels, add some jewels and you’re ready for dinner! They’re great for our little ones too! How many times (a flipping day) does he go running around and take a tumble in the yard and come back with dirty knees? How many times a day am I changing his pants? Enough that i feel relieved when he’s in his distressed denim which allows those dirt stains and perhaps even adds to the look. Of course, getting them dressed with too many holes can be more trouble than its worth so for the kids its more about the wear than the tear – kids distressed denim means the pants are softer, giving a worn look (to camouflage the mess) while also being more comfy for little one’s delicate skin The messier these jeans get the more it can add to the style – so you can feel free to mess the dress (errr… the denim) and have fun without the worry! MOMMA LOVES… the layered look for women and children

People ask me all the time what to pack when they’re coming to visit me in LA. The truth is at any given point in the year or even in a day we can range 30+ degrees in temperature so I always advice to bring layers. The layered look can be incredibly chic but it can also go horribly wrong. The best advice I can give when trying to accomplish a layered look is to start with the least bulky item of clothing and work outwards… Also, work with varying lengths – so a longer shirt under a cropped sweater and then your coat. Layering is great because when its freezing cold out you can bundle up, but when you get inside where the heat is in over drive you can shed some layers to your comfort. This is also great for kids who we constantly worry about being too hot or too cold. All of this said, getting the layered look can be difficult to achieve style wise and also uncomfortable for our little ones who don’t understand and don’t have the patience for it, so a lot of designers have made it fold proof. They have coordinated the layers for us to accomplish the look and some times (not always) these layered pieces can be separated to your preference (for example dresses that come with a sweater overlay or jackets with detachable sleeves). The look is incredibly stylish and gives some dimension to our look which seems as though we put a lot more thought into our outfit than we actually did (the styling has been done for us by the designers). For our little ones, they get the comfort of their normal t-shirt but with the added coverage of a thermal underlay and then it’s one less step when getting them dressed or their are kids clothes that come as a bundle (pants with a tee and vest, or leggings with the tutu overlay) which makes styling them that much easier.
