MOMMA NEEDS… non skinny jeans for women and children

So, skinny jeans have been in for several years now… They are not showing any sign of going anywhere any time soon. I like skinny jeans, I think they’re great and I think they are flattering on most body types – but I also think its time to change it up and look for some non skinny jeans. A lot of women may not feel comfortable in the skin tight jeans that have dominated the market – so I wanted to do a post on all the amazing non skinny jeans option out there to keep you comfortable and looking your best! The denim market is so enormous and such a huge part of every wardrobe so its important that we all find our perfect pair. Non skinny jeans could mean a flared leg, a wide leg or even just a more subtle boot cut – all incredibly wearable and chic. I actually get so many compliments when I wear my flares because they actually are so flattering and people aren’t used to see in the silhouette! Non skinny jeans are also great for our little ones because, lets face it, getting them dressed can be a hard enough challenge without having to find a way to shimmy up a pair of skinnies! MOMMA LOVES… high tops and highchairs!

Max’s high-tops and my Isabel Marant wedge sneakers – its all about high tops and highchairs baby!

High tops are so popular, it doesn’t matter if you’re 2 years old or 50 years old, if you’re a soccer mom or a fashionista mom, these sneakers are hot! They’re comfortable and yes, incredibly stylish! Whether you prefer a wedged high top sneaker (to give you a bit of extra height) or something more streamline and flat, there are so many incredible options that will have you chasing your little one with ease and finesse! They look great paired with skinny jeans or even a maxi dress – celebs have been rocking this look (with the help of designer Isabel Marant’s perfect wedge hi tops) for years. I am no athlete and actually have not owned sneakers for years until this trend hit the big time – now I have my Zara wedge sneakers and I recently invested in the Isabel Marant’s… This is a trend I hope is here to stay – I can keep up with my little one and then, without missing a beat, head out on stylist pulls or brunch with my girlfriends – done and done. They’re one part ironic and one part heaven sent! Great for out busy lifestyle and also perfect for our little one’s play schedule. MOMMA LOVES… polka dots

Just taking the pups for a walk in our polka dots and micro prints (sadly max’s are concealed by the gorgeous pups!)

Polka dots are hardly a trend and more of a staple. Feminine, sweet and yet effortlessly cool there is something about polka dots that keeps us coming back for more. They’re classic and safe but there’s noting twee about these spots. Now a days they’re more graphic, bold, varied and interesting. Polka dots are great graphic prints which feel safe and familiar yet they can still be strong and modern. Whether you like pretty and preppy or prefer a bit of an edge there are polka dots for every style that can take you from the office to the park to a night out on the town. This print is fun and easy to wear – perfect on our little ladies because they have that feminine youthful appeal but they can still be grown up and sophisticated for us momma’s as well! MOMMA LOVES… the peasant blouse

Max and I in our peasant blouses… Max’s actually came from his Papou’s last trip to Greece!

The peasant blouse is both simple yet chic and beautiful. There’s a nostalgia about it – a peasant blouse always take me back to my childhood when my mom would dress me in smocked dresses (which she would make herself) and little embroidered blouses which seemed to highlight my greek heritage… There is a bohemian simplicity to the look which allows it to be referential yet still very modern. The peasant blouse will always be popular among women and children because its comfortable, sweet and feminine without being overly fussy. Its timeless and while it may have been what my Greek ancestors wore on a little island over a hundred years ago, it is also what I wear today. Whether I’m running errands or going out for dinner – its universal appeal has never wavered. You really can’t tell whether a peasant blouse was bought from Barneys or on the side of a road in Spain. In fact, you will find that a lot of designers who feature a peasant blouse in their collections were inspired from their travels. Its funny to think back to the peasant blouses of my childhood and see that those tops are still as ever present in the kids market today. I love the boho baby look an the peasant blouse is the easiest way to accomplish the look. Of course, for little boys, it may be more about the fabric, the fit or overall feel – clearly there is not a huge market for boys blouses, but check out some of my favorite peasant blouses for us and our mini-me’s!

Max’s Toms and My Louboutins are getting ready for a nod to nautical this summer!

One of the most classic and ever present trends is the nautical look – its clean, polished, elegant and and overall effortless classic. I recently did a post on stripes and thought I needed to follow it up with a nod to nautical accessories. There are just so many beautiful options out there that can add that extra bit of something special to your look. Nautical accessories don’t have to be all anchors and rope – the sailor vibe can be accomplished with something striped or a simple as anything red, white and/or blue color. MOMMA KNOWS… accessories make the outfit

There’s no question, as a stylist, accessories make the outfit. The bits and pieces we choose to put with a look can dress it up, down and turn it from boring to fabulous. Now, I have a love affair with my bags and shoes, but that’s not what I’m talking about in this post…. I’m talking about all the other (sometimes forgotten) accessories - belts, hats, scarves, statement jewelry – that can transform a little black dress or simple jeans and t-shirt. I have never been much of a belt person but I love my scarves – my classic look is jeans or leggings with a simple top, blazer and scarf – its all about the details. An incredible piece of statement jewelry can be all you need to turn a simple walk in the park outfit to a night not the town outfit. Investing in classic pieces and then letting the accessories make the outfit has been a long time style secret of fashionistas everywhere. My little boy hasn’t quite gotten into accessorizing, but I can’t resist how adorable he looks in his amber teething necklace! MOMMA NEEDS… distressed denim for women and kids

Me in my distressed Blank NYC jeans with my darling mini-me clinging on in his gap distressed jeans…

I love my distressed denim. They’re cool, comfortable and nobody would know that my little max just wiped his hands all over them. My dad would look at me and huff, “I hope you didn’t pay full price for those – they’ve got holes in them!” but you can’t please everyone. Distressed denim once again delivers that effortless look but these are not the shapeless shredded jeans from the 80′s – today’s look is tailored and sexy yet worn and torn. Denim designers have gone to great lengths to insure that their jeans look naturally distressed without losing their fit. Throw them on with a relaxed tee and pair of sneakers or boots for the park and then change into heels, add some jewels and you’re ready for dinner! They’re great for our little ones too! How many times (a flipping day) does he go running around and take a tumble in the yard and come back with dirty knees? How many times a day am I changing his pants? Enough that i feel relieved when he’s in his distressed denim which allows those dirt stains and perhaps even adds to the look. Of course, getting them dressed with too many holes can be more trouble than its worth so for the kids its more about the wear than the tear – kids distressed denim means the pants are softer, giving a worn look (to camouflage the mess) while also being more comfy for little one’s delicate skin The messier these jeans get the more it can add to the style – so you can feel free to mess the dress (errr… the denim) and have fun without the worry! MOMMA LOVES… the layered look for women and children

People ask me all the time what to pack when they’re coming to visit me in LA. The truth is at any given point in the year or even in a day we can range 30+ degrees in temperature so I always advice to bring layers. The layered look can be incredibly chic but it can also go horribly wrong. The best advice I can give when trying to accomplish a layered look is to start with the least bulky item of clothing and work outwards… Also, work with varying lengths – so a longer shirt under a cropped sweater and then your coat. Layering is great because when its freezing cold out you can bundle up, but when you get inside where the heat is in over drive you can shed some layers to your comfort. This is also great for kids who we constantly worry about being too hot or too cold. All of this said, getting the layered look can be difficult to achieve style wise and also uncomfortable for our little ones who don’t understand and don’t have the patience for it, so a lot of designers have made it fold proof. They have coordinated the layers for us to accomplish the look and some times (not always) these layered pieces can be separated to your preference (for example dresses that come with a sweater overlay or jackets with detachable sleeves). The look is incredibly stylish and gives some dimension to our look which seems as though we put a lot more thought into our outfit than we actually did (the styling has been done for us by the designers). For our little ones, they get the comfort of their normal t-shirt but with the added coverage of a thermal underlay and then it’s one less step when getting them dressed or their are kids clothes that come as a bundle (pants with a tee and vest, or leggings with the tutu overlay) which makes styling them that much easier. MOMMA LOVES… heart prints – lets get ready for Valentines Day!

Valentines Day is once again upon us – it seems like the Christmas dust has only begun to settle and yet when I look around there are heart prints everywhere. A holiday based on expressing your love for one another can’t be the worst thing and, to be fair, I really love heart prints. I know I did a post a few months back on the love motif but I guess we could always use more love! Children’s clothes will always feature plenty of love messages and heart prints because our children are the ultimate symbol of love but make no mistake there are lots of options for us as well! Everything from jewelry to bags, shoes, tops and dresses feature the widely popular symbol of love and its will always be an iconic, wearable and feminine print. I know this week I have been heavily focused on prints – but it just seems that women are looking for a way to wear their heart on their sleeves (ha ha ha – I couldn’t help myself). MOMMA LOVES… tops that make a statement for moms and kids

Tops that make a statement have been popular for babies and kids for ages – there’s nothing quite so darling as a newborn baby in an I love my grandma onesie or even a ladies love me tee… Its funny and sweet to dress our little ones in the words they can’t yet say. But in a world where Twitter, Facebook and blogging has become so prevalent it was only a matter of time that making a statement translated into fashion. Why tattoo our body with a thought or mantra when you could just where the t-shirt – it seems far less permanent… That said, I’m with stupid and various other not so elegant slogan tees have been around for ages too – but that’s not what I’m talking about. These tops are witty, thoughtful, and far more beautifully designed. This is not your tourist tee – these tops that make a statement are done in beautiful clean fonts and without too much fuss – the wearability is in the simplicity. The statements might be in french and they might be somewhat suggestive – but they shouldn’t say anything you wouldn’t want out there in the world. Love, peace, and a bit of silliness never hurt anyone – its essentially a great take on your basics. Rather than wearing a plain tee or sweatshirt the tops with text allow you to have a bit of fun while still being casual, relaxed and even stylish. Alexander Wang sent a statement top down his f/w 2014 collection with Parental Advisory emblazoned on the front and this look was immediately knocked off before his version could make it to stores indicating just how mass this style has gotten. Celebrities have been rocking this trend often as away to make a statement without saying a word when trailed by the paparazzi. Again, the key to wearing these tops is to fun with it but always keep it simple. For the mom’s put something positive in the world – it should go without saying, but never feature anything offensive or with swear words!
