MOMMA LOVES… the union jack print – it not just for the royals!

Okay, yes, my husband is English and my grandmother is english, which makes my son more English than anything else – but I just happen to love the union jack print. For those unfamiliar with “union jack” it’s the British flag but also a long time symbol for everything from the punk movement to the monarchy and it is a print that transcends British pride and has become a part of our pop culture. No other flag has been used so often and in so many ways as the union jack. Countless artists, musicians, fashion designers and even furniture designers have used the british flag to represent everything from anarchy to just great aesthetic design. We can see it used in fashion at the highest end by designers such as Alexander Mcqueen as well as in less expensive labels and children’s lines. My darling Max has been wearing his union jack printed clothes from the moment he was born (of course he was born when the UK was hosting the Olympics so you can imagine the amount of onesies, pjs and various other union jack souvenirs we were gifted) but has continued to rock the design. I myself am obsessed with my Alexander Mcqueen spiked union jack clutch (which I have featured here in a past post) as well as my Zara tees emblazoned with the flag. Why not salute the birth place of the Rolling Stones and the Sex Pistols as well as Kates Moss and Middleton! RUNWAY REINVENTED… bambi gets high fashion

Designers find inspiration from many places… The designer’s own archives, street style, movies, art and often their own childhoods. Givenchy designer, Ricardo Tisci, often uses graphic prints in his designs which sets the fashion world on fire and sends fashion editors and celebrities alike clamoring to get his latest “it” piece. His growling rotteweiler print tops sold out immediately when they came out years ago and inspired countless knock offs. Well, for his Fall/Winter collection he sent out a new print inspired from his youth – a bambi print fused with the image of a lady. Once again celebrities and the fashion elite went nuts over the look and it has already been photographed on countless celebrities and been featured in every magazine that could get their hands on it. Furthermore, Kim Kardashian instagrammed a picture of a miniature version of the top which Tisci (longtime friend and collaborator of Kanye West) sent for baby Noth. So, once again we have the age old circle of fashion of who inspires who… Perhaps our children might be more stylish than we are – setting trends before they even become trends… Here are the Givenchy pieces that have hit stores and some options for our little ones to keep up with the trend (before they start setting the next ones)…

MOMMA LOVES… the most fabulous shoes

This is for all my fellow shoe addicts out here. This isn’t about practical footwear – this is about fantasy, whimsy and imagination. These are the shoes that made me stop in my tracks and fall in love. These are not necessarily the shoes you buy, they’re the ones you dream about… and every now and then when you can’t stop dreaming they end up in your closet. That’s okay. I always say, its good to want things. Its not the worst thing in the world to find a pair of shoes inspiring, intoxicating and to occasionally make a guilty purchase. MOMMA LOVES… a little lace

When was the last time you wore lace? It certainly seems a bit dressy or fussy for running around with your toddler or even going to work but not anymore. Lace has been everywhere on the runway, redcarpet and of course in stores… but its not necessarily fancy. Its decorative, yes, but its used sparingly and more as a way to add a bit of style to an otherwise very practical item of clothing. A lace panel in a sweater, a lace ruffle on a t-shirt, or a bit of peek-a-boo that enables that item of clothing to take you from day to night. It may sound crazy but that little bit of lace can get more mileage than you think – from the park, to the office to dinner… There’s an easy way to dress it up or down with a bit of styling. Throw a blazer on and you’re ready for the boardroom, pair it with boyfriend jeans and its perfect for a trip to the park, add heels and its time for a night out on the town. MOMMA PLEASE??? superheroes and princesses

Since the beginning of time kids have enjoyed playing dress up… and as long as there have been stories of superheroes and fairy princesses, these have been the go-to characters little boys and girls have loved to dress up as. We often laugh at how our son, Max, looks like a young Clark Kent (Superman curl and all) and this year I was hoping to dress him as superman for Halloween. Sadly, the costume I wanted didn’t come in his size… so we went with Spiderman. MOMMA NEEDS… the wedge sneakers

I am not a sneaker girl. I have never been an athlete, always did everything I could as a kid to get out of gym, and was baffled by the hiking culture in LA when I moved here, so clearly I am not going to be anyone’s fitness role model… I am a high heel girl… since I was in school I was obsessed with them. I would practice, practice, practice around the house and breeze the hallways in my high heels – walking in heels really became my sport… That said, I would TRY to find cute sneakers. It seemed like something everyone should have in their closet and the practical choice to wear for those long days standing on set or running around on appointments, but I just couldn’t figure out how to make sneakers look cute… And then Isabel Marant came on to the scene with her wedge sneakers and I couldn’t figure out if I loved the look or hated it. I liked the idea of having the extra height while still being comfortable. I even kind of liked the bizarre contrast of the chunky shoe with skinny jeans but I also thought it looked a bit ridiculous. So, I decided to go for the Zara version of the wedge sneakers and I’ve never looked back. My lord are they comfy!! I could run up hills while carrying my baby, I could schlep all those heavy garment bags around town, I could even go out to dinner with my husband and feel as though I looked pulled together. These shoes were life changing! The number of compliments I got were off the charts – oddly, mostly from men!! Seriously, even my Fedex guy commented “hey, are those the Isabel Marant’s? They’re hot.” I was pretty floored… and impressed by his fashion knowledge. And so, as fall approaches once again, I’ve dusted off my trusty Zara sneakers and I am looking forward to another cold season in comfort… I have even been contemplating making the jump and going for the Isabel Marants… These wedge sneakers exist at every price point and I have selected some of my top picks below…

MOMMA LOVES… the skull motif (for us and them)

So, in honor of Halloween week, I wanted to do a post featuring one of my favorite trends (which has been around since the beginning of time) the skull motif. The punk movement made skulls rock and roll and over time they have become a mainstream style staple. This is largely in part to Alexander Mcqueen using the skull motif repeatedly in his high end designs. We can now find the skull print not only in the expensive market but at all price points for both ourselves and our mini-me’s. MOMMA NEEDS… the carry-all bag

It doesn’t matter if you’re a mom on the run or a woman who carries everything but the kitchen sink with you everywhere you go, women need of a giant bag to lug around all of our miscellaneous stuff. From wallets, sunglasses, cell phones, our partner’s phone and wallet, sippy cups, a sweater in case it gets cold, cosmetics, snacks, tissues, wet wipes, diapers, ipads, keys, a bottle of water, I’m surprised designers haven’t put wheels on these enormous bags we’re labored with! The problem I find often is these large bags are crazy heavy (due to the structure and hardware on the bags) before we’ve put anything in them! No wonder we’re all walking around with chronic shoulder pain! Anyway, I am on the quest for the best carry-all bags that look cute, can carry all of our stuff (as well as that of our partners and children) and won’t necessarily weigh us down. I must also note that the FEED brand bags are the brain child of Lauren Bush and the proceeds from the sales of the bags go towards feeding children around the world.
